Re: Wartime 1/4" drive socket sets
I recently found this small S-K set on eBay and took the opportunity to get some shots of some wartime S-K sets together. I still need to find a couple of sockets. I also took another look at my NOS Williams set to check the wrenches since some of the sets had mixed markings. Fortunately my wrenches were all marked “Alloy”.

Re: Wartime 1/4" drive socket sets
I found this amber handle S-K spinner with a cad plated shaft at a Berkeley estate sale yesterday. It will go into a wartime 1/4” drive S-K set.

I noticed that one in passing too. The size and layout of the box suggested it originally contained a lot more, and the mix of Whitworth sizes is odd too.Hartofoak wrote: ↑Sat Mar 30, 2019 12:28 pmJust got outbid on this nice Walden short extension etc. here in the UK that Phil told me about.

I think this Walden set is nicer, and a full box, but the mix of square and hex drive stopped me buying it:

Re: Wartime 1/4" drive socket sets
Strange that two similar sized sets should surface recently here in the U.K.
I too watched that partial Walden set, but unfortunately had to pass on it as I was up at 38,000 feet at the end - if you get what I mean
Here are the sockets which the Vendor described as Whitworth, bit I think he was confused by the capital W ? From what I could make out they are the regular Walden sockets ? Pity it was incomplete though.
Now for something completely different which was this super little Plvmb set in a similar sized case that also sold recently here. However the photos were not the best. The case is stamped ' Plvmb Tool Co Los Angeles ', and with what appears to be ' Plvmb . 800 ' in the lower left corner ?
The grey finish appears to be original, and is similar in colour to Don's USN set.
The contents were mixed - some Plvmb with some interesting dwarf DBE's marked ' A E ' with six point openings. From what I could make out most of the sockets were also six point with the exception of two which were eight point. Included was a little extension driver with forged ' ears '.
This all suggested to me that it might be a Plvmb special set Don has learnt that it might have been a set supplied for a Rolls Royce aircraft engine, so thanks for that. This sort of makes sense as it was for sale on the south of England - Southampton. Which has an airport ( Hurn ), and other aircraft establishments nearby. So I guess it was issued, and later found it's way to a new home, then to end up in a charity shop nearby.
Perhaps someone has the answer, and hopefully it might get posted here ?
Certainly a Rolls Royce set which sold at a Rolls Royce price too

Re: Wartime 1/4" drive socket sets
Afternoon Len. Brilliant sunshine here - must be in the wrong country.
That 1/2' square by 1/4" hex Walden set is still up / back up. I think they have run that auction several times, just no-one wants to meet that price.
I'd very much like to know what the rubbed paint marks in the first Walden set were rubbed by, the size, shape, and layout look odd.
The Plomb set is a little rich for me, though the price per piece isn't that high I suppose. It has to be a special set of some kind with that mix of contents, and with the spanners numbered AE 200, 201, 202, 203 and so on. It could be aviation, but all the Packard Merlin tools are marked "AT" and I would suppose the "ordinary" British Rolls Royce Merlin tools would not only have a similar mix, but look similar, and the Packard Merlin kit image has a lot more components in it and a lot more obviously special tools. Looking at it again, that box marking could be "AT 800" though. It has to be post-1941 as the tools themselves are all marked "Made in USA" as opposed to the earlier LA marking.

Re: Wartime 1/4" drive socket sets
Hi Gordon I too noticed that the other Walden set has resurfaced since last year's disappearance.
The partial Walden set has a stencilled ' G ' on the exterior. That Plvmb Los Angeles appears to be stamped ' A . 800 '.
Weather was better in Spain

Thanks Len, it does sort of look like AT on the image though. There is so much we will never know I suspect.
Too much fighting over towels on deckchairs down that way for me to indulge, but I'll keep watching the auctions while you live it up ...

Nothing like getting up at 6 am while on vacation to claim your beach chair! Though if you're a tool guy you'll probably be up anyway headed to a local boot sale!
Another one of these found me but it is one of the nicest boxes I have found. Guess I'll have to find all the missing pieces....

Just send me the box and I’ll fill it up for you. It may be a while before you get it back though.

Re: Wartime 1/4" drive socket sets
I found a nice dark finish 1/4” drive S-K ratchet attached to a matching 5/16” socket at an estate sale on Thursday. I added it to the set in progress on the left.

Re: Wartime 1/4" drive socket sets
Update to my midget Bonney set. FINALLY located the near impossible to find V22 nut spinner!
Everything in the box is wartime except for the V7 socket, which is postwar and chrome. But I'm sure one will come along eventually.
