Re: Wartime 1/4" drive socket sets
Thanks, Phil. I’m happy to have finally found one of those elusive 7/16” sockets and have added the set to my basement display. Other than the 6 vs 12 point sockets the set looks pretty similar to the keeper set in my GMTK.

Re: Wartime 1/4" drive socket sets
Here is a Duro Chrome 1/4” drive set I received as a Christmas gift from a collector friend. It came with the spinner shaft that the handle had likely disintegrated and was missing. I added a donor handle and a ratchet. I need to find the Duro Chrome marked 8 point sockets to replace the clever wood spacer.

Re: Wartime 1/4" drive socket sets
Here is a 1/4” drive D-I set that arrived from an eBay seller yesterday. I was pleased to see that all of the sockets were included. Now I need a dark finish ratchet, spinner and a crossbar.

Re: Wartime 1/4" drive socket sets
I grabbed this Walden set for the dark extensions and other tools. The sockets were nothing special.
I don’t seem to be able to stay away from the D-I 1/4” drive partial sets.

Re: Wartime 1/4" drive socket sets
I found a partial Walden set with some nice unused looking dark finish pieces which I used to upgrade the keeper set in my GMTK.

Re: Wartime 1/4" drive socket sets
Hi Don. One item that has puzzled me about 1/4" sets over the years is the appearance/disappearance of the short extension bar for the 41-T-3538 MVMTS, namely "41-B-302: Bar - Socket Wrench Extension". There is a schematic illustration of it in the 1943 TM10-475. Do you come across them as I can't recall seeing an example in any of your images. I'd be glad to have your thoughts. Edit: I have just taken another look at your posts and found some examples! Do you have a Walden example?
Re-edit: This is embarrassing. I see I brought up this whole subject a few years ago!!! At 75, my memory is waning. Anyway, it was good to re-read all the posts.

Cliff, that's hilarious. I know the feeling though.

Cliff,
I’m only a couple of years behind and I feel that I’m catching up quickly. In all of the Walden sets I’ve had, I’ve found exactly one. Here it is again.

Re: Wartime 1/4" drive socket sets
The short (but unmarked) extensions are much easier to find in S-K wartime sets.

Re: Wartime 1/4" drive socket sets
With no short extension bars included, does this mean that Walden sets were not used for the Motor Vehicle Mechanics Sets, or has hat been discussed before and I missed that as well!? Having realised my mistake, I nearly deleted my post, but I'm glad it brought a smile to you guys.

Re: Wartime 1/4" drive socket sets
The 1/4” drive sets have always confused me a little bit. Some brands sets shown in period photos would seem to be missing the 7/32” and 3/16” sockets but include the short extension. Other sets have the smaller sockets included but don’t seem to include the short extension. With the FSN printed on the outside of many Walden sets, I wouldn’t hesitate to use them from when the 1/4” drive sets were introduced until the contents changed away from the inclusion of 12 point sockets. I haven’t seen the late war all 6/8 point socket sets come in a box with the FSN printed on the exterior on any of my found examples. It may be that the ORD was a little casual about the sets exactly matching the RA PD images.

Don and Cliff,
I have found or bought more walden sets than I am comfortable admitting to. Having said that, only two of them included the short extension.

The cat is out of the bag now. I can’t believe that you hadn’t mentioned those before! I really like the dark one!

Re: Wartime 1/4" drive socket sets
I did buy this partial set recently mostly because it included the dark finish crossbar. The sockets were likely original to the set, all similar in appearance with the detent holes. No short, dark finish extension was included.

Re: Wartime 1/4" drive socket sets
As I was looking for something else I came across a set I've posted before but I thought it would be a great addition to this thread. I found the empty box in the repacks and added the rest later. Note that it is stamped 2615.
