Tin, does your TW have an FSN on it?
Wingnutt, thanks for posting your’s. That’s a great find. Are you going to put together a 4th echelon kit?
I’ll update the spreadsheet....sometime. Am out of town with a relative in the hospital, and didn’t bring my laptop.

Re: FSN Marked Tools & Their Dates of Production
I found this photo on the net of a 41-H-169-30 brass hammer, but with no details on size/weight/MFR:
Downloaded from this link: www.flickr.com/photos/100761653@N07/152 ... otostream/ (he also has a G503 tool collection, so I'm hoping he'll post to this thread, and will not be unhappy that I've attached a copy of his photo).
The font of the stamp looks unusual to me for a US-made, WW2 vintage item, but I'll be interested in the feedback of those more knowledgeable than me (which is about everybody on here!). I checked my copies of the following documents, but didn't find anything:
1) ENG 3 Class 41 (January, 1949) Major Item List Federal Class 41, Hand Tools.
2) ORD 6 SNL J-12 (October, 1954) Special Tool Sets for Small Arms and Automatic Weapons (SNL Groups A and B). Oddly, I found no reference to any sort of hammer in this manual.
EDIT, add:
3) ORD 6 SNL G-27 (July, 1945) Tools, Maintenance, for Repair of Motor Vehicles.

It belonged to the 41-K-84-25 Armorer's Tool-Set, which was loaded, among other places, into the Dodge Emergency Repair Truck (G-61). The list I have is from the French version, which says it was 3 ozs. It also gave some dimensions for the striking face diameter and the length of the head, which I can't recall. I am sure that Dave could tell you more. A few have popped up here on the G before. I could be mistaken, but I believe Cliff Hart (Hartofoak) may have one. I'm preoccupied for the rest of the day, but if you poke around with the search tool using the FSN or 'bronze hammer' here you may find them.

Re: FSN Marked Tools & Their Dates of Production
Good memory Greg! An interesting hammer as it had both "TAXI" and FSN numbers. I don't have one as I missed out on the auction at the time and it went to Germany. It is referred to in the spread-sheet at the top of this topic and below is a link to my post showing two examples. Your link Steve also shows another hammer with the same Taxi number, but the example you post shows a different FSN. All very complicated!

Re: FSN Marked Tools & Their Dates of Production
Thanks to both Greg and Cliff for their feedback. Here's the link to the 41-K-8425 (French) Armorer's Kit which Greg mentioned: viewtopic.php?t=211910
This TAXI numbered hammer pictured below has run through several cycles on eBay in the last month or so. It has the TAFX2A number on the head, but no FSN (and an owner's mark...), which makes it somewhat different from the hammer Cliff posted. I want one of these hammers pretty badly, but.....
Markings of known examples, so far (I added bold below, for clarity):
1) 41-H-165 and TAFX2A. HAMMER, brass, dbl-bell-face, 3 oz.
2) ................ TAFX2A. ".........................................."
3) 41-H-169-30. HAMMER, bronze, wt. 3 oz. 11/16" wide by 1-15/16" long (I translated specifics from the spec sheet posted on the French Armorer's Kit thread, above).

Re: FSN Marked Tools & Their Dates of Production
Here is a 6 point deep socket with a FSN, and sized at 1 1/16'' that I found at an auto jumble around twenty years ago here in UK.
It is plain steel with no traces of any finish, and appears to have had a hard life judging by it's condition.
Unfortunately it is un branded, I know Greg has seen this piece before, anyone else care to comment ?

Re: FSN Marked Tools & Their Dates of Production
So following on from my previous post, here is another deep socket with a FSN.
Seeing the word ' Buffalo ' made me think ' Barcalo Buffalo ' so I had to have it. An auction site purchase here in UK.
Thank you Don for putting me right on that - I believe there was a manufacturing Company ' Buffalo ' - so any further info out there would be great.
I believe the finish is cadmium plate ?

Well they say things go in threes, so here is another one
This NOS APCO MOSSBERG SPW with it's post WW2 dated box which I purchased many years ago from Tony Sudds here in UK.

Re: FSN Marked Tools & Their Dates of Production
Trust me - it's only selectively good, Cliff! But I wish I could figure out how it works. For example, I can remember my 2nd grade locker combination, but I can't remember my kid's birthdays, and, more to point right now, the location of a wrench I own that I badly want to take a photo of right now!
I don't recall what my comments were at that time, Len, but seeing it again sent me to my references.
Oddly, the 41-W-642 series in the ORD 5 seems to brake related. There is a star nut adjusting wrench (41-W-642-8), a brake adjusting DBE wrench (41-W-642-40, 7/16 x 1/2, 8-point) and a DOE eccentric brake wrench (41-W-642-95, 5/16 x 3/8), issued separately or in a set (41-W-642) with some other related tools, not in the 41-W-642 series, including a screwdriver, pliers, and additional DOE wrenches that Plomb, at a minimum, provided to the ORD with their set no. 200-B.
No 41-W-642 series tools of any kind in the 1944 or 1945 ORD 6 SN G-27's
Your wrench sure looks like a spark plug wrench (a pretty big one with that opening!), but they are all in the 41-W-32XX and 41-W-33XX series.
I agree, it does look cadmium plated. There are many companies with a name that starts with 'Buffalo' in the WPB MWSC books, e.g., Arms, Fire Appliance, Sanitary, etc etc etc, but none of the ones that look like they might could have made tools (e.g., Foundry, Forge, Dieworks, etc) listed any tools contracts. Also, I am a little skeptical of that copyright mark. Contrary to popular misunderstanding, cadmium was used before, during, and after the war as a rustproofing alternative to chrome. Before and after for ecomomic reasons.

Re: FSN Marked Tools & Their Dates of Production
Greg
Thanks for the information, all a bit of a mystery which is a pity, I think you drew a blank last time if my memory is correct.
Glad you agree on the cadmium finish, my own thoughts are that the ' 13/16'' Buffalo ' is of post WW2 vintage. Hopefully someone may have the answer ?

I concur, with the (C) copyright symbol - if that's what it is? - pushing me that way too.

Re: FSN Marked Tools & Their Dates of Production
Here we have yet another Universal Metal Prods. L.A. Calif. 15 inch auto wrench.
I purchased this NOS piece here in the UK from a well known Newbury based military vehicle / parts dealer in the late 1980's.
As it is has no ' Made In U.S.A. ' marking which I believe is a possible indicator for WW2 tools - I have doubts about it's true vintage ?
