After finding the 1944 No 76 Snap-on ratchet wrench it seemed like I needed a No 75 to complete the set. I found a few listed on eBay and this one was reasonably priced.

Steve (gpw_42) traded me this AN marked crowsfoot that seems perfect for my NAF box, especially since it has the USN hand engraved on the back side. Thanks, Steve!

When I introduced this set, one of the tools included was this metal handled 10” Pexto monkey wrench (41-W-2352) shown below. I recently bought a 15” version at the Tahoe flea. I found the FSN (41-W-2355) in the NAF catalog for the 15” wrench and it will be added to the NAF box.

Hi Don
Did you see this 1942 Life photo recently posted over on the "Vintage Photos" page.
I believe it is of a Douglas B-18 "Bolo" at Barkdale Field Air Force Base having a service. Is it a Kennedy toolbox there on the ground?

It sure looks like it, Cliff. Thanks for posting it. Do you happen to have a link to the original photo? Maybe we can see more detail.

I got a higher resolution image off the web (USAF museum I think via Wikipedia etc!). I've already played with the image to produce the insert. There seems to be a round? indentation at the top of the roof apex which may help with identification.

The round shape at the top is unique to the Kennedy cantilever boxes. The box in your picture could hardly be from any other manufacturer.

I found a well used Plomb NAF combo wrench on eBay recently. After several visits to the evaporust tank, I think this is as good as it’s going to get.

Re: Tools in my NAF Kennedy cantilever box

On Friday my Wife and I checked out an antique store in Sebastopol in Sonoma County. We found some rusty treasures and among them were some D-I sockets, which I never leave behind, and a familiar looking 1/2” drive sliding Tee with USN markings. We brought them home and cleaned the sockets in evaporust. It turned out that all of the Duro/Indestro tools had the Navy markings except the u-joint. I added the tools to a 41-W-2997 wartime set and will be keeping it with the Navy toolbox.

They all look good Don, but I'm glad I stopped with just one of those boxes - my house is a little on the small side after all. I'm still picking up the odd marked tool here but I don't recall seeing any NAF-marked tools for sale in the UK. :D Happy New Year all

Gordon,
I can’t disagree with you on only having one of these sets. I found an empty dented and rusty box at an estate sale in October. Common sense should have told me to leave it where I found it but it came home with me anyway. I pounded out a few of the dents and started filling it up. I refer to it as my masochist set. At least I’m not alone. I think Phil has some of these too. :D

That is almost ( but not quite ... ) too many tools Don. Luckily, or not, I have to make specific buying decisions on most things, so if I already have half a dozen of something it is fairly easy just to ignore. Of course anything period I discover in person pretty much as to come home with me.

So, NAF tools, pretty much a Pacific-theatre thing then?

I’m not sure. If there aren’t any to be found in the UK that might be the case. I think I find Navy tools around here because there were several Navy bases in the area. Alameda, Mare Island and Treasure Island are all quite close to home.

Anytime I see a rivet set at a flea market, garage or estate sale I pick it up. They are used in the upper echelon Sheet Metal and Radiator Mechanics set as well as appearing in the NAF catalog. The FSN numbers are the same in both locations. I’ve gathered up nine over the last few years and I’ve made an attempt to figure out the FSNs on the ones I have. Very few manufacturers markings appear but several have the number stamping. Here are the various sets with my best guesses as to the FSN on each one. I think that Wingnutt and Matt have found some too.
