Carpentry and pioneer tool sets?

Post by maddawg308 » Sun Jul 02, 2017 8:44 am

In addition to putting together a GMTK, I am also interested in slowly putting together a 1940s-1960s period carpenter's tool kit, and a pioneer tool kit as well (not the 3-tool pioneer kit that is stored outside in the rack on most US military vehicles, but the one in the wooden box that would have been issued to engineering units). What kit(s) should I look for, as far as nomenclature goes?

maddawg,

I have two kits, one partial and one empty. I will post images today to further the discussion. I had done some research on AB Eng units for my book Blood on the Talon (out of print) and found some cool things along the way.

Here are a few images of the two sets that I have. I had been working to fill the carpenter's set No 2, but am still working on that. There is a nice image of the contents label. The other chest is a Pioneer Tool Chest. It is empty with no label. There are probably some SNLs with all of the correct contents for them. THese two chests I found within the last 10 years here and there.

For example, here is a copy of the TO&E for an Glider Engineer Company as of Dec 44 which lists some of the equipment assigned to the unit. You can see a few different sets listed under the ovals.

I would recommend getting a TM 5-225 rigging and engineer hand tools. It is nice as it has a lot of different tool sets and smaller squad sets, combat platoon and platoon sets both pioneer and carpenter. It also has blacksmith, pipe fitting, demolition, tinsmith and sign painting.

Thanks for the info, and especially thanks for the photos of the tools list breakdown. 17thairborne, can you get me approximate dimensions of the two boxes? Also, does the small box on the bottom have an inventory list as well? Thanks for any more info you can provide.

On Saturday I found a Carpenter Equipment Set No.1 toolbox at the Tahoe flea. I think it will be a fun project to try to fill it up with period correct tools. I’ve started by looking through my garage and pulling out some possibles. Jason has informed me that my Plumb hatchet isn’t a half hatchet and sent me a picture of a more likely example.

For anyone who needs it, here's the reformatted link which Oz posted above, to a 2017 thread titled "1944 Carpenter's Tool Set #1:"
viewtopic.php?f=48&t=281872&p=1636599&h ... r#p1636599 Page 1 contains a partial component listing from WW2, thanks to a post from Wingnutt.

Don, you have an interesting challenge on your hands with the Carpenters Kit No. 1. Is that component listing made from plastic? If so, I think that gives you some options about what vintage tools to place in the kit..and you already have a great start!

I wonder how long the general kit was (has been?) issued? I think I remember those kits being assigned about 1 per company-sized unit when I was in the Army (sure wish that I'd saved my copy of my property book...to say I was glad to have the whole thing signed over is an understatement!). After a little cursory googling, I found the following more recent info:

1) 1989 Hand receipt catalog covering content of sets, kits, and outfits components list for tool kit, carpenter's, engineer squad, (NSN 5180-00-293-2875) (LIN W34648) [microform.] https://searchworks.stanford.edu/view/2715371 Might be useful to get a copy.

2) 1992 hand receipt superseding one from 1984: https://evergreen.lib.in.us/eg/opac/record/17189350

3) New NSN established in 1997 (no component listing) https://www.armyproperty.com/nsn/5180-0 ... d-kit-5300 The new NSN makes me wonder if the contents changed significantly.

Edited 20 Aug 19 to correct the link for the 2017 "1944 Carpenter's Tool Set #1". Copy & paste error on the initial post, but I confirmed it before posting the edit.

Steve,
Thanks for the link. I did some searching for information on the Set No.1 and there seems to have been many different variations. Twertsy sent a listing for a box offered for free in the DC area (kind of far from California) but I saved some pictures.
Jason has a half hatchet head that is likely to be correct and just needs a handle.

According to the list of contents, I’m going to have to find a couple more of these.

I'm confused. Steve's link is taking me back to this thread. I'm curious because I don't remember posting a carpenter's toolset packing list. Don emailed me and thought I might've had an empty box (and I suspect he saw the same post as Steve), but I don't recall having one. Maybe I snapped a pic at a flea market but left it behind.

Apologies for creating the confusion - must have been a cut and paste error on my part. I've edited my other post in this thread. Kirk figured out what I meant, not what I said.
