With the Signal Corps coding I'd guess in a radio service trailer or similar GMC-type truck or drop-in pod.

Jason, it is 4' wide and 3' High so I think it is to go in a truck , the only picture I have found is for a QMC Spares Trailer.

BC-396 Modulator DM-27* P/O SCR-274A,B

The SCR-274 radio was a multi-channel multi-unit airborne transmitter-receiver operating under local or remote control, fitted in aircraft such as the B-17 Fortress, B-24 Liberator, and B-26 Marauder

I am not sure it is a Signal corps stencil on the side Gordon. Would they have a whole spare cabinet just for the Modulator ?

Sire-T-Ord11-shd-bc396-bm-1

Well the BC-396 is a bit of a giveaway, it's not like they used that format for anything else. If it tracks to a DM-27 that is a radio Dynamotor, a voltage / frequency changer thing. I have a couple here. I'd guess they were quite maintenance intensive - unlike most radio equipment they have actual moving parts and those parts move at quite a speed.

I'd guess that one cabinet that size would barely be enough as a container for spare parts and a location to rebuild them on. Bought from an area that had WW2 USAAC / USAAF airfields on I expect?

The TO&E for an Ordnance Medium Automotive Maintenance Platoon, Aviation called for TWELVE of those spare parts cabinets mounted 6 each in two CCKW trucks.

Thanks Matt, that is interesting, have you got a manual or anything that gives stock numbers or has any images ?

I obtained the T/O&E from Military Research Service in South Carolina. He does it the traditional way. Send a cheque, he sends you physical photocopies of he T/O&E. I don't have any images or manual. The description here just says:

Cabinets, spare parts, Type I, M1940

But I have seen a motor officer's manual or similar that showed how the trucks were laid out with the tool kits, spare parts kits, oxy-fuel and/or hoist if so equipped. But I can't remember what that manual was. Facebook forum member "Willie Joe" has it in his collection. He was showing me a few months back.

Thanks Matt, when I cross reference that description in various places it does seem to confirm what it is.

And the 41-C-10 matches up with the late war FSN on the cabinet.

I have checked the colours on my 41-c-15 to the US Army Specification No.3-1 Color Card and can confirm that it is Gloss Olive Drab 108 and repainted in Gloss Forest Green No.109. Both are spot on.

Roger,

Thank you for confirming the colors of the tool cabinet. Do you know what the modern equivalent (from TM-9 paint company, etc.) is to match the Gloss Olive Drab 108?

Thank you very much,
Henry

TM-9 have the original colour card so they should be able to tell you. We have no access to the TM-9 paints over here in the UK.
Probably worth dropping them a line. These are not high gloss, more like a modern Semi gloss.

Thanks Roger, more great information.

For those of us here in the UK I wonder if B.S. 987 C is still relevant today ?

I have had this booklet for some forty years now. The other shades may be of interest to those with Commonwealth vehicles / tools :?:

Stay safe, Len
