True, but I'm going through flea market withdrawal. If I have to drive 500 miles, I'm finding a sale today!

I just looked through the 1942 Craftsman catalog for the first time. What a letdown! This is by far and away the most disappointing catalog I have ever seen. No individual model numbers on anything. Everything is summarized and/or presented in kits. Bleh.

I understand that if you were looking through that catalog for WW2 tools used in the war, you may have been disappointed with the presentation of the catalog. For me, however, it was very informative to see all of the Dunlap tools that were available during the war.

It has its moments, Don. In comparison to other catalogs of its era, I just don't like the way it's laid out. Call me a catalog snob. :D

Greg,

I agree as to the Craftsman catalog. As you know, I have a copy of the 1942 Craftsman catalog and, IMHO, its usefullness lies in what it doesn't show.

If the catalog represents every tool that Craftsman manufactured that could be in a GMTK then as I've concluded and you may agree (now that you've seen the 1942 catalog), there is no way that one could put a complete GMTK together solely with Craftsman tools unless the 1942 isn't representative of all the mechanic's type tools Craftsman produced or as the war went on Craftsman produced more tools that met the specs for the GMTK. One specific example is that neither the DOE's nor the DBE's listed in the 1942 catalog contain all of the wrench sizes required for the GMTK.

Thank you,
Henry

Frankly, I haven't gotten that deep into it. I was literally referring to the layout. As for a single mfgr providing all the tools in the GMTK, I have yet to find one, based on advertised catalog production anyway. Not even the big boys (Williams, Bonney, etc). The chisels and punches alone defy it. As well as the special tools such as the oiler, rule, etc. Not to mention the infamous 41-W-603 long DBE in 15* pattern and 11/16 x 3/4 openings, which only a few mfgrs were making before the war.

Link goes to the right site, but returns "not found" as the link is truncated. If you type 438 in the search box it goes straight to it tho'
