Axe find

Post by hell-fire » Sat Apr 19, 2014 8:54 pm

Just wondering if this Axe is a good one for a Jeep, for some reason I cannot view Jeep draw but if I remember right this is a "good one"

Black over original OD and it is 4LB.

So did I get lucky?

A great find. The one in this photo was given to me in 1974, by a well known UK military vehicle collector of the time and is an authentic USA military True-Temper axe that goes on my MB.

And here's another from the late John Barton's post

One on epay at present looks to be a bargain ...

Thanks mate,

It is possibly the best condition you could hope to find in one of these, has no been used as a hammer and looks to never have been sharpened, now I have to decide whether to clean it up or simply fit a handle & leave it as is.

Nice find!
My best find was at a jeep show, red true-temper axe and handle.

Axe Identification

Post by Hartofoak » Mon Apr 21, 2014 4:18 am

Can anyone please identify a U.S.A. marked True Temper Axe that I acquired last month. It weighs about 2.5LBS. and required a bit of work on the handle which is about 14 inches long. I've included a G503 axe and an M1910 in the photo for comparison.

I suspect that your hatchet is a WWII version of the M1910. That particular M1910 looks fairly early, WWI or just after. Just my guess.

The M1910 axe/hatchet in the photo is dated 1944 so is WWII. The one I'm asking about is heavier (~2.5LBS) and is not dated. The 4LB axe is also not dated but is of WWII origin. Hope I have not confused you Luke? Is the 2.5LB axe in my photo of WWI origin?

I was wrong about the m1910. The 2.5lb still looks WWII to me. It's possible it's for some vehicle or a toolkit (carpenter's toolkit?) & not intended for individual carry.

What a sad state for this axe to end up in. At one of the flea markets I often go to there is a vendor who shines everything and anything you can imagine. Usually I just walk on by but today this caught my eye. (In case you can't see it in the picture it is a True Temper Flint Edge Kelly Works)

Just polished but everything he has shines like the picture. I did buy it....will try and save it. I suspect I will remove the wax and paint it OD green and it will look very nice assuming paint will hold to that polished surface. It is nicely stamped, at least he didn't polish that off. I will post pics soon.

Is it a full fawn's foot handle?

I bet if you scuff it with a green scotch brite it'll take paint ok.
