Re: Hip Roof Cantilevered Toolbox Identification
Don,
Thank you for the info. on the handle. I think I may try to take mine to a good leather and/or luggage repair guy and see if he can rewrap the leather on my handle, although despite the box having a "fine" bit of rust the handle is in fairly good shape, with the leather wrapping still pretty much intact. So maybe I'll just leave it alone.
Thanks Again,
Henry

My wife and I went to an estate sale yesterday and she spotted an old dilapidated chest with a perfect handle for my newest Kennedy cantilever box.

Nice score! The handle is in nice shape yet reatains just enough patina to match the oatina on your Kennedy.
Thanks,
Henry

Re: Hip Roof Cantilevered Toolbox Identification
I don't know if there is local interest, but I saw a hip roof cantilevered gmtk box at an antique mall in Columbus OHIO yesterday. The listed price was 22.00 before the 10% discount. It had the proper tag attached and I think it was early 50's. I passed on it because it is not the type of thing that fits my display. Sorry, no pictures. I know there are several members of the"GEE" in the Columbus area so I thought I would give a shout out.

Local acquisition this weekend. The owners father was an AF mechanic from the late 40's to late 60's.

Re: Hip Roof Cantilevered Toolbox Identification
Saw a familiar shape in an online auction here.
I thought it might be WW2 Simondsen, but when it turned up although it was a Waterloo Valve Spring Comp. Co. Type II case, it was stamped Mil-Spec-3152 so introduced 1950 and obsolete 1963 - it will have to go with the 1950 PROTO 100HR ( GMTK type ) box in the Sno-Cat as it is that time frame.
Needs a really good clean and the black paint, maybe it is tar, taking off the outside. Apart from that and an amateur repair to the bottom part of the main latch it is fine.

Re: Hip Roof Cantilevered Toolbox Identification
I picked up a junior sized Kennedy cantilever box at an Estate sale yesterday. It was interesting in that it had a metal handle along with the single center latch. Compared to my other cantilever boxes it is smaller in every dimension.

Re: Hip Roof Cantilevered Toolbox Identification
That's a nice find. The single latch looks more appropriate for that size of box - on the full-sized box there would be a lot of stress on that single latch when it was full and you picked it up. I'm still cleaning the Waterloo box ( above ) No real rush to get it finished.

Re: Hip Roof Cantilevered Toolbox Identification
After re-reading the entire thread, I realize that I forgot to post the Kennedy box I picked up back in January. Some previous owner replaced the original center hasp with a really hideous modern one which I removed almost immediately. It seems to have an area for 1/4" drive sockets in a lower tray.

Re: Hip Roof Cantilevered Toolbox Identification
Those socket slots are interesting. If we assume the largest one is for 1/2" then the others could be for 3/8" and 1/4" drive, or since that is a typical USAAF case, maybe one slot is for 9/32" drive like the WF series?
If I had to guess it would be 1/2", 3/8" and 9/32" drive, since the 1/4" ones always seem together stored in the small boxes. Never seen another case with those small socket slots though.

Re: Hip Roof Cantilevered Toolbox Identification
So, where are these boxes at WRT market value? Typical flea prices and value in the collector world?
I saw a really nice one yesterday, but at $75, it was too rich for my wallet.

Re: Hip Roof Cantilevered Toolbox Identification
Agree--I have seen a few at fleas this year, and the even the somewhat nice ones are around $60 -$70 --too steep for me-- and none with the military markings....

Re: Hip Roof Cantilevered Toolbox Identification
My Waterloo box pictured above was the equivalent of $12 ( I know, I'm a cheapskate ) and really just needs stripped and painted, plus a latch part, but it is Korean period.
My WW2 Hamilton and Kennedy boxes were around the equivalent of $25, but again needed stripped and painted - just need a Simondsen one now to have the set.
I probably did spend the equivalent of $50 in stripping and painting the boxes, so a really good original with good paint that needs nothing but a wipe down would not be unreasonable at $75

Re: Hip Roof Cantilevered Toolbox Identification
I really wished i had taken a pic of the VERY detailed stamping on the box I saw yesterday. I don't recall what the date was, and trying not to get on the ground to read the 8point font made getting all the details difficult.
