What is pinch point wrecking bar?

Post by Steve Webb » Tue Oct 11, 2022 7:21 pm

I bought the equipment box just listed and one of the sets has a 30" bar wrecking claw and gooseneck. No problem on what that is. It also has bar wrecking claw and pinch point 30" not sure what that looks like?

Google it, little pry bar on one end, punch point on the other, kinda like for lining up two holes to but a bolt or river through, instead of using a phillips screw driver.

The 1939 PLOMB catalogue I have calls them "Conventional type garage bars" and has 3 smaller sizes, the biggest is 24". It's in the thread below here on pliers and hammers, the bars happen to be on the same page as the hammers.

Thanks, it is an interesting bar. I knew it was not a crowbar and have heard of a chisel point on bars but that was interesting. It is listed in the equipment chest for Loading "B" pioneer equipment, platoon, engineer.

Several tool sets with a variety of bars and their descriptions are illustrated in TM5-225 Rigging and Engineer Hand Tools December 1942 -

e.g. Figure 105 - Engineer pioneer equipment - platoon set

#4 Crowbar, 5 foot
#5 Wrecking bar, 30-inch gooseneck
#6 Wrecking bar, 48-inch gooseneck
#7 Wrecking bar, 30-inch offset claw

e.g. Figure 108 - Engineer carpenter equipment - platoon set

#5 Offset wrecking bar, 26-inch - Which appears similar to the Plvmb Conventional Type Garage Bar :?:

The Plvmb Tool Company catalog #19R lists the following

Three sizes of Conventional Type Garage Bars
Two sizes of Rolling Head Bars
Five sizes of Ripping or Wrecking Bars - Albeit ' Temporarily Discontinued '
One size of Grease Bar

May be useful ?

Thanks, Len that is the book I have and go to. The chest has multiple uses depending on who is using it including Calvary. The term pinch point was not known to me.The loading B on the label is where it appears

I am going to put plexiglas over it to keep it from getting damaged. Box weighs 37 lbs so loaded it would be a very heavy beast.

Steve,

The plexiglass over the paper label is a great idea. I may do the same for mine with some small slotted screws. Can you post an image of the box? I think I may have a similar and will dig it out after the rain stops. I am not sure if mine has a label or not.

Great. Thanks for posting. That looks like what I found also. I need to drag mine outta the barn and verify that I have a label in it. It looks like a rather difficult list to fill if you want original tools, but I'm looking forward to the challenge.

Some of those items would take 2 men and a boy to lift it. I have some tackle, rope, straps and chains in mine. None on the list but nice for me to have in one place. I am not sure if I would try for B or C to fill.

Took two images of my large pioneer tool chest. I am beginning to agree with another forum poster that the chests with the plexiglass originally affixed to the label are post war. Here is mine, about 5'x2'x2' I will conclude this is 50s or later, so I am now only purchasing the chests that have the paper labels like yours. I do agree with the idea of putting plexiglass over them to protect the image.

We had them on tanks; we called them Tanker's Bars, although they had another designation I never bothered to learn. They were 60 inches long and tapered round on one end, and the business end was square about a foot long and the point is chisel shaped; not V. The crews used them to assemble track with.
