Thanks guys. Who knows when the cabinet was built, but the Atomic Energy Commission didn't exist prior to 1946. The Bendix Corp. appears to have had contracts with the U.S. Gov. and the AEC from the start.

Hoping that I don't start glowing in the dark!

OOOH aan AEC brass tag. That's sexy. That is certainly a keeper. Remember the government likes to move stuff around and keep it. I work in US Embassies and just a couple of weeks ago found a bunch of Teletypewriter wrenches. So just because the Atomic Energy Commission didn't form until 1946 doesn't mean the chest is that new.

Dave,

Thanks to Dave for the specs and template for the lock plate..

I chose to extend the bar a bit to cover more of the top drawer...the bottom tab is made from cutting the lock plate and welding it back together..the slot was tricky...needs to be cleaned up...but all in all not bad and functional..

Matt, I have 3 extra blanks if you need a any made up...

thanks Dave!

Phantom I do! let's talk. Although I have the template I'm not set up for bending steel that thick.

Okay, I've really got to stop looking for these cabinets now.
I'm picking this one up tomorrow. It's been painted grey and has a pipe vise mounted to the top.
Looks really straight. And apparently the drawers are full of stuff.

I have to admit I like these 41-C-15 cabinets too. I have been very fortunate to now have two of them, both with matching original paint, both in what I consider excellent original condition (nothing, bent broken, or missing) - to include nice relatively clean and undamaged original hardwood tops, and both bought locally to me within a two hour drive radius. But since the supply catalog only authorizes two, I’m stopping at two! Thanks for the tip in the thread above because I snagged my second one from York PA at a great price. It's shown in the pics I posted next to a Lyon stool I got when I bought my first one locally; it was not even in the craigslist ad and the homeowner threw it in with my purchase! I believe these cabinets were manufactured by Lyon but I cannot find makers marks on mine. I should also ad these cabinets weigh as much as boat anchors; you simply cannot buy something this solid in this day and age. I have also now ordered two lock bars for them thanks to this thread; I searched for the correct steel and a local fabricator for quite a while but never took it too far and it stayed at the bottom of my project list. So thanks to everyone in this thread and on the board in general for all the helpful tips, work, and info that is provided for guys like me. These two cabinets are solid vintage models virtually and identical except for the placement of the bottom draw handles (on one version they are at top of draw on the other they are towards bottom). Ironically I have seen photos somewhere of pairs of these cabinets with a similar situation with bottom drawer handle placement, but I cannot remember where. Best Regards, Eric
