24v coils

Post by petejeep » Thu Feb 27, 2020 6:04 am

The Bosch 24v coil on my M201 has broken and they are now unattainable. Can I fit a 24v coil from a Land Rover FFR (Land Rover Ignition Coil 24 Volt FFR 552765 LU/45120 2920-99-806-6451). Attached is a picture of the broken coil, which is not standard to Hotchkiss.

If your M201 has the original waterproof ignition system still fitted, you can try the 24Volt coil from the M38A1 jeep.
Available here: https://www.m38a1.nl/?383,nekaf-m38a1-j ... t-inwendig

I don't know for sure if it will fit internally in the M201 distributor housing, but they will know.
OR, fit a complete 24V waterproof distributor with coil from a M38A1, which will fit.

The Land-Rover coil you mention will need to have special fittings also which will make it fiddly and it is more expensive as well.

Thanks for the advice. The original combined Hotchkiss waterproof coil and distributor has been replaced with a conventional separate distributor and the Bosch coil, as shown in my picture. Do you think the M38A1 coil would work with this set-up? I would have a to make a bracket for it. Picture shows my distributor.

I see.
The problem with the M38A1 coils that fit into the combined waterproof distributor is that they have a special internal connection for the HT lead.
I don't know if you can fit a "normal" HT wire and cap to that, but that is probably the same problem as for the LandRover 24V one.

Did a quick search on the web and found this: https://www.us-army-military-shop.de/pr ... ry_zone=CZ

Your vehicle system has been modified to use a civilian coil, therefore one like you pulled out should be found, NOT a military waterproof enclosed ignition coil (unless you wanted to swap distributor housings, wires and plugs back to the milspec setup)
Here is one you can either buy, or use the numbers to look up one and order it on-line, etc. Manufacturer Part Number: 913526K PROHEAT® IGNITION COIL FOR THE X45, XL900 MK I, XL900 MK II, AND THE XL1500 MK II, P/N 913526K

Simple google search for 24V automotive ignition coil

All this said, you can very likely use a 12V ignition coil if you merely add a drop down resistor on the input side...check a local junkyard for a really cheap one perhaps.
