Post by gareth rogers » Sun Jan 25, 2009 2:13 pm

My plugs are sooty black all the time ( not oily ) have put new jets , gaskets , float etc in the Solex carb, have also fitted recon engine but problem carries on, would welcome any ideas ?

Does it run ok otherwise, or is it choking up on idle? running rich, have you checked the plugs after a decent run?
Assuming youve checked the obvious, is your air filter clean? and choke lever shutting off.
The Solex carb always runs on the rich side, mine always used to flood externally after switching off, try lowering the float level by very slightly bending the the plate that rests on the float, so as the float rises the needle valve closes earlier

My very personal opinion is to use the Carter carburetor anyway. My M201 has the French made Carter and I am happy with the performance. Maybe you want to get one and try it instead.

I agree, the Carter is a better carb, if you have one in good condition, but they are expensive to buy a good one
