GPW Shock Absorber Wrench

Post by Paul Bill » Sat Jan 14, 2023 9:38 am

Hi, I have a set of shock absorbers in need of rebuilding before I fit them to the GPW I am restoring.
They have the access tabs so I believe they are repairable.
Does anyone have a detailed drawing of the special wrench required for disassembly?

Any help and advice would be appreciated.

Paul,

The rebuildable style are for the MB and are made by Monroe. GPW's used Gabriel.

The front is A6902 and the rear are A6903. This is stamped on the upper portion.

As for rebuilding them, it is not a good idea. The rebuild kits are 80 years old and in the end they will still leak.

The best thing to do is buy new shocks and put the top portion of the old shock onto the new one.

Hope this helps.

I second that. I have rebuilt 2 Monroes using NOS rebuild kits and both are leaking. Rubber seals are brittle. But it is worth trying. )) I can have idea how the special tool looks like here, however for me a chisel worked well.
