Data plate inquiry - what info for repos?

Post by ScottCo » Mon Nov 28, 2022 5:41 pm

I'm trying to find out more info regarding the jeep I purchased so that I can correctly stamp repro data plates. it is a VEP GPW serial number 5643.

I"m trying to determine what factory it was built in as I believe this can be relevant to what data is entered?

The serial number has a star to the left and right. (star GPW-5643 star)

Other things I'm a little confused about are as follows:

What data goes in the box to the right of "FORD GPW". I've seen the serial number and at other times 4X4.
What data goes in the box for "Gross Weight". I've seen 3125 and 2150 and even 2233?
What data for Parts List T/M 10-???? I've seen 1374 and 1348 or just left blank
What data for Maintenance Manual T/M 10-???? I've seen 1349 or just left blank

Any thoughts on estimate of original registration number?

Lastly it has engine number GPW-6054 but this may not be the original engine that went with the frame. Previous owner was unsure.

Any information would be helpful. I've attached pictures of my frame serial number and the engine serial number as well as the data plate pictures I've collected that all fall within a few hundred numbers of my frame serial number from which I collected the random application of the data which is causing me the confusion. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Scott

I can answer this one:
What data goes in the box to the right of "FORD GPW". I've seen the serial number and at other times 4X4.
That's what is known as the 'mystery box'. The different manufacturing plants had different things stamped in there. For the Louisville, KY plant, it was stamped with '1/4 T'. I don't have a list of what location was stamped with what, but I'm sure someone can chime in with that.

I guess you will never find a more accurate reply.
Thanks, Scott
Hi Scott,
Your jeep was owned by Aaron before and Tom, AKA "The GPW whisperer", gave that information to Aaron in 2009 :
viewtopic.php?p=872504#p872504

I guess you will never find a more accurate reply. That means that you should put 1/4 T in the mystery box.
You jeep brass data plate should be made similar to this one :

GPW 5407 Louisville 3-17-42.jpg
or this one

GPW 6265 3-16-42 Louisville.jpg
So your Data would be:
What data goes in the box to the right of "FORD GPW". I've seen the serial number and at other times 4X4. -> 1/4 T
What data goes in the box for "Gross Weight". I've seen 3125 and 2150 and even 2233? -> 2265
What data for Parts List T/M 10-???? I've seen 1374 and 1348 or just left blank -> 1348
What data for Maintenance Manual T/M 10-???? I've seen 1349 or just left blank -> 1349

Hello CPTAaron,

From my GPW studies and database your GPW 5643 should have come from the Louisville, Ky. assembly. The best DoD range should be March 16 through 18, '42. I believe a close hood number should be 2059031 plus or minus about 75 numbers.

I never did hear why Tom W, the world expert on GPW, does not come to this forum any more. He literally, knows everything. Now I hear he is only on FB, which I do not have.

Simply because he was banned from the forum. It’s written on each of his posts remaining published in this forum.
Tom is also running his own forum. But he is more active on FB.
But be sure Tom is reading our posts  .
