Perfectly safe; remember that 6 volt wiring is much thicker than 12. No dreaming required. You don't hook it up permanently though.
If I have not done it, I do not say it.

Clarity is needed....
You can jump a 6Volt Jeep to the STARTER terminal with 12 Volts, and that's not clipped on the 12V battery, just touched to the terminal to crank it.
No way should you hook a 12V system up to the lower 6V battery directly.
yes is can go boom....

or another way to say it:

clip one the positive 12V lead on the battery and touch the other end to the starter stud, or clip the jumper to the stud and then only touch it to the 12V battery or charger source, but not to the 6V battery.

After cleaning off the contacts of everything, I tried firing her up. I got it to catch, but was missing on at least one cylinder, then after about a minute or less, she sputtered out. Couldn't get her to turn over again.
I've given up trying to figure this out myself. There's a guy in the next town south of here who specializes in older vehicles and has worked on the military Jeeps for friends of mine and comes highly rated and he'll be available around mid July to work on it. I've developed a list of all the stuff I want done with it, to just get it all done at one time and he said no problem to any of it.
So in about a month, it should be running again. I'm okay with spending some money to have some of these issues fixed professionally.

Hello Lee,

Keep us posted !
Good luck on the repair work.

I would also recommend once it is running again, to only use ethanol free gasoline in the jeep.

Best Regards,
Ray

The irony there is that such gas wasn't available anywhere near here until during the pandemic. I pumped out everything in the tank and put in exactly that type before tying to start her again...

As of July 3: SHE RUNS! :)
Image
A guy who lives down our street has several old cars and he offered to come down and check it out. It was combination of many little things, points being a tiny bit off, plugs being a little off, stuff like that. But after about an hour and a half (with the only cost of a length of hose from the crankshaft to the air cleaner and a new set of plugs), we got her running again!

Ray, I haven't taken any 'whole Jeep' photos recently, but it hasn't changed a bit since I took these:

Hello Lee,

Now that is much better :D :D :D :D

She looks beautiful, I am glad you got her running again !
I haven't been anywhere since the virus was released, and ruined things for a while.
But hopefully it is sputtering out, and things can get back to normal, at least it is like that in Florida.

I like the canvas headlight covers !!

Best Regards,
Ray

Thanks, but she's never been restored and the paint is probably from the 90s. As one vet said as it sat next a museum quality (and shinier than the day it probably rolled out of the factory in Toledo) restoration, "That thar Jeep looks like the ones we were using in France," as to how it looked well worn.

Yeah, that was my issue, I'm in WA state where the first lockdowns happened and it's still going strong here (we might even have to go back to masks). For a guy in my 50s, I'm in decent health but my wife has diminished lung capacity from birth and asthma. I can't afford to get COVID and give it to her.

Thanks. Back when I used to grill vets on the things they did, several told me that they either saw Jeeps with covers or headlights removed altogether along the front lines.

Re: 366014, back from COVID snooze. NOW RUNNING

Post by Lee Bishop » Sun Jul 17, 2022 7:11 pm

I took my MB in a drive around the small town in which I live, this morning. She ran just as she did before the pandemic, though the brakes were grabbing to the right, something I guess I'll have to check out if it keeps happening.
She was running when this shot was taken:

And on the road, I'd almost forgotten how cool it felt to drive a WW2 Jeep!

Ticks me off that on the second time driving my MB after getting her to run, the darned brakes pulled to the right. But the same neighbor volunteered to help me pull the wheels and drums to see what's what. I already had a new brake cylinder to replace the passenger side front wheel one where I snapped the bleeder screw flush with the casing a long time back.
So, I made an order from Ron for a whole new set of brake shoes and flexible lines so we only have to do this once as I have no idea when the brakes were done before I bought it in 1999.

Hello Lee,

Good luck with the brake job, sometimes it is best to replace everything and start fresh.
I am rebuilding a 43 GPW, and putting in an all new brake system, including brand new original style brake drums.
The originals were shot and worn out.

To replace them, I used a press and pressed out the lug studs, and pressed new ones in to attach the original hub to the new drum.

A very simple process, just be sure to put a tall socket under the stud so you don't damage the hub or new drum when pressing new studs into place.
If you do that, also be sure to put an old lug nut on the new stud before pressing it into position, as you will need to put a wrench socket around the new stud, to support the drum and hub from bending when using the press to push it into position. The nut will protect the new lug threads from damage, as the socket moves around under pressure.

Harbor Freight has good presses fairly cheap, if you need to get one.

That way you can have an all new brake system and it should work great !!

Keep us posted !

Best Regards,
Ray
