Air horn clamps

Post by aikmanmosquito » Thu May 26, 2022 7:30 am

Sorry to keep troubling you gentlemen, but we don't have as many experts here in the UK. I posted a message re my recently restored MB a week or so ago, well I have another question. The carburettor crossover tube, the company who restored mine have left the tube to airhorn connection without the rubber seal and clamp, when I questioned this I was told that the clamps that are available here in the UK don't fit. I know of two jeep owners close to me and they have the same issue, now when I see pictures on here of many of your Jeeps you have these rubber seals and clamps fitted, where are you guys buying them from as clearly they're better quality than we can buy over here.

Since you are in the UK try Wildenberg. If not, here they are NOS. Order what you guys need and combine shipping for you and your mates.

The rubber is a Slat Grille and early MB thing. They were phased out as rubber was made a critical resource for the war effort.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

Do you mean the seal and clamp between the crossover tube & carb or the air filter and crossover tube? Either way, you’ve been misinformed!!

I’ve just fitted both from U.K. suppliers.

The carb end was a Jeeparts seal with a JMP clamp. This one:- https://www.joesmotorpool.com/cross-ove ... mb-slat-mb on this seal:- https://www.jeeparts-uk.co.uk/home/Carb ... p251912769

The air filter end was a Jeeparts hose with a pair of wire clamps from Fleabay.

I’ve used the same combo on both my MB’s with no issues.

Looks OK to me!

85jeepcj,

According to jeepdraw, that is not the correct seal for an MB.

The rubber hose type seal is the early seal and it used a larger A16 clamp.
Later MB used the thin neoprene seal with the A15 1/2 clamp, this seal carried over to the CJ2A

Hi,

Both my MB's (Dec '42 & Aug '44) have a rubber seal as per the link above with the aluminum A5-1/2 clamp and work perfectly.

The A5-1/2 clamp is also used to secure the brake pipes on the axles.

ORD-9 Section 0304 supports my take on the seals/clamps.

Have you checked the cross over tube? some of the repro ones coming out of Europe have been made with the nearest metric equivalent tube and are larger.
we have had clamps and rubber tubes that fit easy on original but will not fit the desmet ones. original diameter should be 53.84 repros are 54.80.
Thanks

Cheers, I'll look into that. On another note, is there a correct size for the hood reinforcement plates? I have two sets here, both bought from different suppliers here in the UK, and both are different. One set fits the curve of the hood perfectly but is smaller in size and does not have the different sized holes. The other one as I say is larger, not much, but noticeably larger, has two holes larger, however doesn't sit as nicely as the other set, not sure which is the correct one.

Hi,

I have an original set off our ‘42MB that I’m about to clean up and spray.

What dimensions are you measuring?

Thank You for your help. The smaller ones which sit better within the hood measure 68mm by 54mm, the others are 70mm by 58mm, I have to say personally the slightly larger ones don't look quite right. I have so many questions I do not want to take up so much of your time. My first Jeep, wanted one for so long.

Hi,

My originals are 57 x70 (following the curve of the plate).

I’m on my 2nd ground up restoration so ping me a PM if you need help.

You might consider joining the G503 FB group too!
