Best Method To Repair Hood Hinge to Cowl Mounting
Unfortunately my GPW has 3 stripped captive nuts for the hood hinge to cowl bolts. I would like advice on the best method to repair. Can’t find a way to remove the stripped nuts. I have considered cutting slots in the cowl to allow removal/replacement of the nuts. Would that be the best method? What have others done?

Ok, this should be a fairly straight forward fix.
I am assuming the nuts you are referring to, are on the tub , that are way up under the dash ?
If so, I have replaced them.
They are capture nuts, and the "capture" box around them holds them in position.
If you look at them, you will see that 2 tabs are spot welded down, but 2 tabs are not.
You can bend one of the tabs down, carefully wit a long skinny screwdriver , and slide the bad nut out.
Slide a new one in, and carefully tap the tab back into position, around the new square nut.
Now it will take some maneuvering to get up under there !!
If the tub is not on the jeep, it is even easier, I have done both versions.
I would stand the tub on it rear panel, secure it from tipping over, and then you can work on the capture nut clips very easily through the transmission opening and such.
I replaced some nuts on my complete 42 GPW, as well as nuts on my 43 GPW tub, that is standing upright on my driveway.
It can be done, just be patient and get a good contact on the tab to open them.
Best Regards,
Ray

Thanks for your response! I had no idea, could not get a pic of the capture plate, could not find any reference. Unfortunately, I do have the tub mounted, so getting up under the dash would be a real PITA. Do you think it would be possible to insert a small screwdriver in the cowl hole from under the hood and drive the side of the "capture"out enough to push the nut out? Assuming the non welded tabs are on the sides and not top/bottom? Any idea of the square nut size? 1/2 in?

Well, I think you have to go in under the dash.
The nature of how they are bent over, one bent clip faces the passenger side, the other faces the drivers side.
But try any method possible that might do the trick !
I would get some long thin tools, like screwdrivers, etc.
If you take your passenger seat out, you will have some room to get up under there,
They do bend open easily enough once you get a grip on them.
Maybe get the seat out, and you can lay flat on your back to get a view up in there, and go after the nuts you need to change.
Once you get a nut out, take it to the hardware to get some new ones, along with the hinge bolt, to be sure it fits nut !
It is a tight fit, but you can get to them !
( Also if you have small assistant, they would fit better. )
Get good lighting as well, to see the capture nuts.
I don't know the correct nut size, maybe Ron will know ?
I happened to have some old square sided nuts that fit the hinge bolt, and capture cage.
Once the clip gets bent down, tap it to shake the nut loose, slide your new one in , and then bend it back up into position.
Best Regards,
Ray

Hello Ray! Thanks again for you response. I don't think there's any way I could get under the dash (I'm too (old, decrepit, big)) but maybe I could find someone to help . Frank

My brother & business partner was wondering why I was buying an assortment of
square nuts for our nut & bolt dept. Even my fastener rep was a bit surprised!

Well,
A little helper would be nice !
It isn't as hard as expected, mainly you have to get a sight on it, and then bend the tab with a long screwdriver.
It does bend easy, so if someone can get to it, it can be done.
Maybe tap the screwdriver with a hammer to get it to bend out.
Maybe even a good pair of needle nose pliers would be effective as well ?
Good Luck !!
Best Regards,
Ray

Thanks Ray. I've got one hinge nut that is spinning and this info will come in handy.
