Is this an original GPW dataplate?

Post by RiverMB » Thu May 12, 2022 7:26 am

I have found this jeep and would like to know if this is a Ford GPW, early or late. Unfortunately these are the only photos i have as the owner is old...any help appreciated. Thanks!

I can't see if the jeep has a GPW or MB frame. Front crossmember is round on a MB and U-shaped on a GPW. Going by the data plate the chassis is GPW at least. Engine (if fitted) can be anything and gearbox is possibly an automatic as there are no shift levers to be seen on the transmission hump.

Dataplate is a (post-war) replacement as fitted to some reconditioned jeeps. There is a post about those plates here on the G : viewtopic.php?f=4&t=311968 and viewtopic.php?f=4&t=313400#p1822945.

Early or late is difficult to see. You need numbers for that and the number on the data plate is hard to read. Lightswitch is early-ish push-pull and covered rifle holder is late war.

The reflectors on the front wings suggest post-war use by the Dutch army but are not a clue by itself.
Probably this jeep is a "salad"-jeep, rebuilt postwar by the Ordnance and supplied as Marshal aid to the Dutch army and re-imported back to the US later.

More information would be welcome as to frame, numbers, engine etc. to determine how much it will take to get it resurrected.

Hi,

No holes for first aid bracket behind dash means tub is pre-June ‘44.

If windscreen is original, rifle brackets were fitted from late ‘43.

That should give you a rough date.

As Klass says, front crossmember shape will tell you if it’s an Ford or MB/Midland frame.

If it’s a GPW, check on top of the drivers frame rail by the engine mount for a stamped number, that will allow accurate dating.

It seems to be a Ford GPW :

Serial number with 6 digits.
Nice colors and pretty good shape.

Lots of original parts on this one. Rear seat, top bows, top bow hardware, etc, etc. Check out the rams horn tow hooks and the mount for the radio antenna. Looks very interesting.

The data plates look like they are original.

The springs are MB and besides no First Aid Kit bracket, it has the push-pull light switch.

My guess is this jeep was a Govt. rebuild but it is still very complete and a great starting point.

More pictures will get you more info from the experts on this site.

Hope this helps,
Peter

First post; welcome. You seem to have found what has become nonexistent east of the Rockies; a jeep with a decent body! Post more pictures.
