transfer case companion flange
I am brand new to the forum so excuse me if I ask a dumb question. I am trying to find the correct diameter of the companion flanges for the transfer case for a MB?

Re: transfer case companion flange
Welcome to the site. Hope it is a good experience for you.
First off, on here, there are no dumb questions. Just folks looking for information they don't have or know.
Next, I see you are in Australia. Cheers ! I have several good friends from your part of the world as the direct result of being a member on this site.
Back to your question. Communication can be an issue on an international playing field.
I know what the transfer case is, but I am not quite sure what you mean by the diameter of the companion flange ??
Need a little more information as to what you are referring to.

Re: transfer case companion flange
Thanks for the welcome! I think I am a little diseased with military vehicles or at least have been for years. Running out of shed space but thought I would do one more jeep.
To my question the companion flanges on the transfer box on the MB are both scored so would leak oil like a running tap. I would like to machine them back and re sleeve them or repair the groves and speedy sleave them but both actions need to know the correct diameter of the flange to ensure the correct fit of a new seal. Hope this makes sense.
What I need is
1 the diameter of the flange
2 the correct speedy sleeve

Re: transfer case companion flange
I think I am starting to get the picture.
You are referring to the seal surface on the driveshaft yokes ??
These yokes slide onto the splined transfer case main shaft, front & rear and the driveshafts connect to them.
These seal surfaces, on the yokes, often have grooves worn into them and as you say, make for a poor seal surface for the seal lip to seal on.
A Speedi Sleeve is the normal repair. Or replace the yokes.
These original seals were two pieces. The seal was inside a second sleeve, inside the transfer case bore. Common for folks to remove the original seal and not realize there was still a second piece still in the seal bore. It all has to be removed for the replacement seal to fit.
A standard replacement seal will work. The Speedi Sleeve is not very thick and the replacement seal lip will fit OK. Just a matter of measuring the diameter of the yoke seal surface. Your sleeve supplier can take it from there.
Hope I am on the right track.

your on the the money. thanks for the info folks. The yokes are a bit on the scarce side in my neck of the woods so necessity is the mother of invention!

Re: transfer case companion flange
Hi from Australia.
You can build up the worn groove with bronze and machine it back to size. Or, machine the yoke just enough to smooth it out and then machine a sleeve and press the sleeve onto the yoke and machine it back to standard size. You need to make a mandrel to hold the yoke in the lathe . The transfer case flange might fit in a four jaw Chuck ok. Speedi sleeves are expensive ... I just repaired two worn diff yokes with thin sleeves I machined myself.
The diff yokes are 1 and 9/16" diameter not sure about the t/case flange diameter.

mike as a matter of interest the transfer yoke seems to be the same size 1 9/16.

Re: transfer case companion flange
A further question if you dont mind. in order to put a speedy seal on the flange I need to fill the old seal groves in the shaft. What is the best fix here? I assume there is a compound of some description I can apply and sand back in readiness to accept the speedy seal?
