Emails and phone numbers in threads (((updated))) 3/12/22
I've noticed I'm seeing more and more emails and personal phone numbers in posts lately. I would strongly advise not to do that. For your own safety use the PM feature or emails. You can direct members to your profile for your email. There are scammers and general all around weirdos everywhere and they are very good at what they do. Give them less, they'll have less. Unlike locked sites we have "guests" who can see posts but can't access profiles. I'd hate to see anyone have an issue when steps can be taken to protect yourselves. In addition, do not use an email address as a username.

Well said Bill. It's an unfortunate fact of online life that there will always be some scammers out there looking for ways to rip someone off.

Re: Emails and phone numbers in threads
Hi Bill,
I used to do this as a younger me... I now realise and don't do this, nor want my my number in those threads (going back 10-15+ years).
HOWEVER.... I can't go an edit those threads to remove my number.
Any suggestions?

Also - on sign up page - when new members join, how 'bout a brief line encouraging them to at least list the state they're in? ie; western PA or similar. Vague locations shouldn't compromise safety or security and are very beneficial when looking for parts & help.

Bill,
Your point is well made.
I dropped my guard since Texas already sells my info to home buyers and car warranty people.
Thanks Again,
Peter

Re: Emails and phone numbers in threads
Good warning.
Do not forget that it is not necessary to physically browse the forum to collect the email and phone umbers.
Bots are doing that automatically almost every day. And they ignore the rules stored at the root of the website server.
That is the reason why in the past I have written a little script running on my server.
It generates automatically and every day a list of different fake email addresses offered for free to the bots.
You cannot stop these bots but the idea was to create a huge pollution in their database of stolen emails.
Recent bots are even able to scan emails embedded in images.

Re: Emails and phone numbers in threads
Not like it will get read but from now forward put your email or phone number in your post and the entire post will be deleted. I edit dozens of posts to remove them. I'm trying very hard to protect members here from the relentless onslaught of scammers contacting members outside of the forum. Non-members and blocked persons can't see your profile information. If they can't see it they can't scam you. You put it in the post and as a "guest" they now have your contact information.
So, no warnings, no editing, just deleted.

Really? Their information, Ron's site. You have no idea how bad this has gotten in the last few months.
