Hi Oz and Ian.

Thank you very much for doing this thread, the information is very useful and I will be using it when I bolt by June 42's body to the frame.

GPW 119911. 5-28-42. Photos credit to Hemendra Upadhyay. This was sold in NJ at an auction on 4-9-2016. POST 2, 5x pics.
Ian, you have a typo on the date, it should be 5-28-43.

A couple of shots from my June 43 GPW 123050. I don't believe the body has ever been removed.

This is great info. Thanks to all. keep them coming. It is helping to see when the springs were mounted. Anyone else with an unresotred GPW or pictures during tear down, please post them. This thread has highlighted the importance of the forensic details when taking an unrestored GPW apart. The photos before are even more important than ever to help us understand what hardware or features were ORIGINALLY installed on GPWs of a specific date.

THANKS TO ALL
Oz

Ian, great pictures! I wish I had taken them when I got my hands on GPW17331, but was too busy stripping it :D
Thanks mate.

Know the feeling- we all get excited to get into it… you’ll know for the next one!

I’ll see what I can find of photos from 11730 of that spot. I know we repaired it so I can’t vouch for what is there now. Shall look at the photos of 12044 better too for info on that area. I’m also in contact with Chuck Lutz (Oz is too), who has a GpW 17XXX too, so be interesting to compare his with yours.

Cheers, Ian.

After reading all the comments I have updated the images as included below. I have disregarded the discussion of the two bolts that go on some GPWs as pillar to tub connections. This may be an ACM issue, but I cannot confirm that right now. Since they are not body to FRAME hardware, I am leaving them off the list. The No.2 Bolts are for the Toe Board Gussets to side frame mounts.

I am also taking off the lock washers that are not listed and allowing you/us to decide what is best. Take a look at all of the great unrestored images posted by others and it will be clear.

Here is my final...final version.

I've been agonizing over the bolt charf for a few days an I have to make a final change. Here is what is changing and why:

Change bolt 1 and 2 locations and hardware. I believe the TM has some errors in the listing order, that is explained when you look up the lengths of the bolts in the back of the TM. This only became apparent to me when I began assembling my tub and posting data on my site. Here is the rationale:

1. Most everything goes in Order, front to back, left to right, its how draftsmen and engineers work. So bolt No. 1 should be in the front and the rest in order front to back. It makes sense ans all the other bolts 3-6 are in order in the diagram.

2. Some of the hardware is mixed up in the listing, and becomes clear after studying the bolt part numbers and sizes in the rear of the TM and actually installing everything. It becomes clear that the TM is in error.

I have made Bolt No. 1 the front bolt that goes into the frame side from the gusset and into the weld nut. (That is why it needs no other hardware such as PAL nut and nut)

Bolt No. 2 is the long special bolt with the spring that gets 2 special washers per bolt, the nut and PAL nut.

I've added the new files here.

I decided to go with Augum Parts in Austria for a few sets of the special spring bolt kits. After 90 days my order was cancelled "due to Covid" and my money refunded with no option to re-order. I ended up purchasing several springs elsewhere for our MV club who are doing early GPWs also. We split the cost on 8 springs from WB Jones using the part number mentioned on the G threads (Part No. C32-187-048) Here is the ordering link:

https://www.springsfast.com/products/co ... 32-187-048

I then found some 3/8-24 x 3 1/2" (0.10" too long but not noticable) hex cap bolts partially threaded. Add a washer, lock washer and nut and the kits are complete.

Total cost per side for bolt and spring is $15.97 including spring and bolt shipping.

Oz-

Nice thread & Cheat Sheet on this problem. The -1348 is definitely more confusing than it needs to be on this issue. Wish I had found this thread before I ordered my JMP bolts set (an 80% solution whose biggest shortcoming is the lack of the 3 3/8" bolt, but that seems to be a deficiency amongst almost all vendors at the moment).

One thing I noticed on your diagram vs the chatter on the forums is the Spring Body Bolt (355498) threads and wanted to confirm before ordering: Is the bolt a course or fine thread bolt?

Thanks-
Tim

Tim the TM says course thread, but many of the G503 threads list it as fine. I suspect those who did a tear down were finding fine threads, so I went with fine thread.

Maybe ought to be a sticky on this thread if there isn't one already.

As purchased, here are the springs and bolts. I partially removed the modern head markings, drilled the heads and inserted thicker washers and fine thread nuts. I think they will pass muster.
