9 Inch Drum Interchangeably
I did an 11 inch brake upgraded on my M170. The 9 inch drums looked good so I saved them for my MB which is over due for brakes. Just noticed that some vendors list different part numbers for the MB drums than for the M38a1 and M170 drums . I think Ron has the same number for both. Are there drums that are compatible with both and others that are only compatible with one or the other?

Re: 9 Inch Drum Interchangeably
The MB had full floating axle. The later ones had a semi-floater.
I would think there would be a difference between them

Re: 9 Inch Drum Interchangeably
From a very attentive reader
1-Ron sells the same drums for both old & new. They are interchangeable & they will fit.
2-Later models fit WW2 Jeeps on the outer hub & are held in place with 3 countersunk screws
3-Original were inside of the hub & held tightly in place by the swaged wheel studs
4-If buying Ron's, [& original] all the wheels studs need to be removed & they do not just bash out! Trying to do so will damage the hub permanently.
5-This how to do the job properly:

No matter which way the drums are done it is usually always necessary to lightly skim all new drums properly fitted on the old hub.
This will get the drums perfectly round & concentric with the hub.

Re: 9 Inch Drum Interchangeably
Thanks Yves,
I’m going to try to re-use 3 of my m38A1 drums and got a 4th from Ron along with the rest of the brake parts for the MB. I will report back how this worked (or didn’t work) to the group when I have it all done.
