Basic help needed please
HI
Totally new to the forum sop please accept my apologies for the daft questions!!
We have a 1943 GPW which was imported from Georgia US. It has a replacement ‘supersonic’ engine head and the only number I can find on the engine block is U62187. To register the jeep in the Uk I need to find the engine number. Could anybody tell me is this is it?
Thanks

Welcome to g503.
To answer your question.
If the engine is original the number will be on an oval machined pad behind the oil filter or on the front right side just below the cylinder head. If it's not original (a CJ engine) it will be on a machined flat just behind the water pump on the top of the block deck. If it is some other replacement engine it may not have a serial number.

Where did you find that U number? If it is on the block behind the water pump, it is a J.
It also will have casting numbers on the lower right side of the block; what are those? Big raised numbers and letters. Post pictures.

Welcome to the "G" John. Posting pictures of your jeep would be great. I see you are in the West Midlands, the same as me.

Correction
If the stamping on the boss above the water pump begins with "U-" it is a an L-134 from a Willys Utility (Pick up truck)
Basically identical to other L-134 CJ engines.

Dragnet Joe is right. That is a utility truck motor....my CJ2a has one as well. Same motor as the other Go Devils. If originality is your goal you’ll be needing a GPW block. If you need to license the vehicle and you need the engine number you’ll have to use that one for now.

Ok, the Utility wagon is not a pick up truck; those engines are marked with a T. There was a true Willys pick up truck.
The Utility wagon is/was a hard top SUV.

Yes, Sorry, U for Utility, T for Truck. Same engine, different application.

Re: Basic help needed please
Many Thanks everybody for your replies. Shame as we were sold it on the basis as being a WW2 era engine but with a replacement head.
Most of the other parts do seem to be original though so we are OK with this as the engine goes quite well. We will have a lot of other daft questions in due course!

Sorry, forgot to say. there is an oval pad underneath the oil canister but its totally corroded so not readable. The U number is behind the water pump.
