Salad Jeep

Post by Jim Thomason » Sun Jun 13, 2021 9:05 am

I have a jeep that is a combination of MB/GPW parts and I think Bubba has been here too. The jeep has an MB frame--no s/n aft the bumper and a 1945 MB body with no data plates. I have no paper work on this jeep. My question is about the motor and what it is and when it was made.
The cast numbers below the starter and generator are:
12-30 638632 W1 N1 - OR N2.
The s/n stamped on the side of the block behind the oil filter is -535540 .
It also has an aluminum tag riveted to the block above the distributer "Rogers Rebuilt Engine" and data.
The cylinder head has a Script "F" ahead of the thermostat housing.
Any info on this would be appreciated
Thank you Jim T

That block was WW2 MB and used on the CJ2A until 1947. Is it a chain or gear drive; chain drives went out in early 46.
Does it have an MB in front of the number on the pad? If your 535K number is the original engine number then it was made in late 44. From memory; engine numbers out paced vehicle numbers by well over 100K by the end of the war.
Of course, it has a Ford head.

Hi,

According to the graph in Nabholtz, engine MB 535540 should be in a frame around MB 410xxx which would make it a Jan ‘45 frame. That would tie in with a block casting date of 30th Dec (‘44).

Try looking on the front face of the drivers toe board gusset for the ACM2 body number. It should be stamped just above the steering column and be in the range 170xxx to 200xxx to be “date matching”.

Has the tag holes behind the bumper, on the left side frame rails been drilled to rivet size or are they smaller pilots holes.
If the holes are smaller, start cleaning the top of the left frame, in the area of the engine mount.
I have seen serial numbers in front of, next to and behind the engine mount. All on top.
First VEP GPWs used Willys frames and that is where Ford put the serial number.
NO tag. Just stamped into the top of the rail. May take some serious cleaning. Rust or paint can cover the number over.

Thank you for all the information. The 45 MB body is not original so it's number is n/a. I could not see markings ahead of the engine s/n -- but will carefully clean more and look again. Bubba welded the front bumper, so the tag area is *****. I will remove the left fender and search the frame for numbers. THANK YOU again Jim T
