Firewall Paint Sequence

Post by bazza46 » Fri May 07, 2021 5:58 pm

I've posted these pictures of a tub I'm cutting up for scrap, in case anyone is unsure of whether the O.D. was applied to the tubs before or after the cardboard pad was attached to the firewall. When I tore off the pad, this is what I found. The red primer that the tub arrived in is still under the pad, with the original O.D. around it. So the O.D was applied after the pad was installed.
I've also clear coated the O.D. to show what it was like when it was applied.
Just thought you might want to know.

How sure are you that this tub has never been worked over? Has it ever gone through a during war rebuild? Post war rebuild? Do you have conclusive evidence it is 100% original?

I assume you are questioning the O.D. statement, not the painting over the pad leaving primer there? My answer is; I don't have conclusive evidence that it hasn't been worked over at some time. I don't think anyone can absolutely attest the provenance of paint .
But there are no rebuild tags on the dashboard and the engine had no tags either (it was standard bore).
It only had one coat of non O.D. paint over the O.D. But if you look at these further sections of the tub that are painted, you can see that the coat is very thin, with no other colours underneath at the margins, and none on top. It is also very well stuck to the metal, as the original paint was. It is very unlikely that it has been repainted under the toeboard, as this is usually inaccessible in a casual paint job, as opposed to a frame off paint job.
The colour is very similar to the paint colour on a 'certified' untouched jeep (see picture) + picture of paint, dry plus, a picture of a different jeep with original O.D. under the grease gun holder on a GPW.
But no, I haven't ironclad proof, but enough to remove reasonable doubt on my mind.

As with just about everything this is a difference between Ford and Willys. Evidence shows that Ford installed the pad prior to painting and Willys installed the pad after the body was initially painted.

That sounds right. This tub was from a GPW.

My 45 GPW is the same way. Red primer under the pad, OD sprayed after the pad was installed.

It seems that GPWs were painted O.D after the firewall pads, grease gun holder, fuel filter, air cleaner bracket, lubrication chart holder and other bits were installed. As for MB's , probably not.
