My local to me jeep parts dealer has recommended a Melling oil pump (£200) for my 1945 Ford gpw. Are these pumps better than the standard pumps that are fitted.

Re: Oil pump
YES! they are far better than any original pump. I always use them on rebuilt engines. They aren't that much here; look on the internet for one. Make sure you get a chain driven cam one and not a gear drive. They are different.

Re: Oil pump
Yes I have the chain driven one. My local supplier informs me that the pumps for both types are identical and the gear at the top of the pump drive in different directions.I am awaiting my mechanic to come over and fit it.George.

Re: Oil pump
Your supplier is correct.
The camshaft in a chain drive engine and the camshaft in a gear drive engine rotate in opposite directions from each other so the gear teeth are slanted in an opposite direction, which make the pump shaft turn the same direction in either app.

Re: Oil pump
You don't need a mechanic to install an oil pump; follow the TM to get the distributor notch in the right place; anyone can do it. I fill them full of assembly lube first; some dip them in oil but that is messy.
