Re: Today my MB is 78 years old. Restoration project
When I ordered the bolts for the steering box to Ron, I was wrong and bought the early bolts kit. I wrote him immediately asking to send me the late (late are jeeps with the torque reaction spring) but they sent me the early one kit. in the early kit the three bolts are the same length.
Jeepsudest in France and Joe’s motor pool have the special bolt for the torque reaction spring and on the catalogue it is said to be 3” long. I will order one in my new order….
The other bolt in that part is just to close the part to the head of the bolt of the main spring. That is the one I was referring to. I think it is not completely threaded and perhaps 5/16 24? I must look for it when I arrive home.

I don't think that part is on Claude's list. Go to page 245 here; http://jeepdraw.com/images/jeepdraw/ADO ... chable.pdf
It's 5/16-24 X 2 with a nut and external tooth lockwasher. They call that part you bought a lock and the long bolt (they call it a screw) is 7/16-20 X 3-3/4". Remember, the "-2" after the initial size refers to the finish of the part (the appearance) and the last number "X 2" is the length. In general use, outside of the military manuals here, we don't usually use the "finish" in the middle of the dimension. It's confusing, especially with bifocals!

No, the long one is 3-3/4 inches long according to that source. Hopefully Ray will verify that as it's so expensive to ship you parts, you want to get the right ones.

I also order a few more original parts to the same seller
The door of the glove box is original with one part of the hinge replaced. The button is original but the catch part is broken, I wonder if it can be fix.
I am happy with the clutch support, with originals bolts.
Little by little I am buying many original parts.

Acquiring and installing one piece at a time...That's exactly how I'm building one of my jeeps. In fact, I have same two rear seat supports waiting to be installed...as I contemplate using real rivets, fake rivet-bolts, "blob" welding fake rivets to look like rivets, or just using nuts and bolts.

As you are your own “jeep police” i am pretty sure you will install real rivets or fake rivet-bolts.

Nice parts !
On the glove box, you can clean out that little bit of rust debris in the slot on the bottom of the hinge, usually with an ice pick, and then get a glove box spring to install in there, when mounted on the dash again.
Your jeep being early used that spring

Parts are important, and the more you find and restore, the more your jeep take shape again !!
Locating the parts is great fun as you know !
Jeeps are made up of parts, get enough of them, and you have a whole jeep .

Ray

Yes, nice parts, when y receive the parts I will sand them. I am sanding all the parts and applying an epoxi paint as a primer. I will look for that spring, and perhaps a replica button to take the necessary parts apart to repair the original one if possible.
Thanks!
Thanks!

Yes,
That button is a very nice early one, and should be able to be repaired using a new part.
There are even nos repair kits for those cat eye light sockets if you need new bulb sockets.
A little more every day !!
I am going to hot rivet in my GPW rear seat brackets today, if I can beat the rain.
The rivet will be heated with the oxy acetylene torch to get it hot and malleable.
I am sure you and Jeff will be interested in the results .
The rivets I found have the correct size domed head rivet to match the originals.
I will cut 1/4 inch off the long shank, so when I hit the shaft end to form a rivet head, it will be the right amount of steel, and not too much, to form a proper looking domed head under the wheel well.
Best Regards,
Ray

You are so correct...I don't why I doubted myself!
Ray, what are planning to use as the rivet buck? I once made one by re-grinding a drill bit to create the shape and after a little pre-drilling and it worked great.

Re: Today my MB is 78 years old. Restoration project
Jeff,
Well let me corect my post, I am riveting the "forward" large rear seat brackets.
Not the smaller rear seat bracket that the round tube of the seat sets into, that you and Tuareg mentioned above.
I just realized that on the Ford the rivets are totally different in design between rear and forward brackets !!
For the larger seat bracket, the forward one, I had the bucking blocks made by a machinist to match the rivet head for inside the tub, and had one made to hold in my hand to pound the rivet once hot, under the wheel well, a slightly smaller head is formed there.
This is for the GPW Ford built bodies.
Naturally, you can borrow them if needed for a forward bracket.
On the Willys, they used the same looking rivet head, but under the wheel well, the rivet is almost flattened, with a punch hole in the center, on the ACM1 and ACM2 bodies. This same design rivet was also used on the forward seat bracket.
Likely much easier to replicate !
These bucking blocks should do the trick, and make a hard job easy !
I will post the results when completed.
The Ford takes 3 rivets on each forward bracket, the Willys uses 2, plus some welding.
The Willys uses the same rivets for the front and rear brackets, and are the same rivets Ford used on the forward bracket.
I was surprised to discover today that the Ford uses totally different rivets, between the forward and rear brackets !!
But I am glad that the rear brackets are still there, and bubba only removed the forward ones, with a crow bar and hammer of course .
Why is the question !
Best Regards,
Ray

That is very interesting and I am anxious to see that rivets.
Why Bubba did that…?
There is no an easy answer for that.
Bubba's designs are inscrutable.
