Rear Axle Yoke/Oil Seal advise.Willys 42 Script.

Post by acespast » Thu Jul 04, 2019 5:02 am

Hi,
I need your advise.I have a 42 Willys Script Jeep. The rear axle yoke/oil seal was dripping oil while in motion. Thus spraying the oil over the underneath of the Jeep when turning. Not much but enough to be concerned.I have replaced the oil seal & a new yoke fitted and it still is repeating the oil spray. Is this common for WW2 Jeeps.I stumped with what to do now.Just leave it or is there something i am missing here.

3 things come to mind.
Oil transferring out the splines inside of the yoke, like on a front crankshaft pulley. Wear on the pinion splines.
I have seen some seals that were a little confusing as to which way they go into the housing. No lip on the O.D. of the seal. Maybe the seal is in backward ??? Rubber seal lip Goes in.
Any side movement in the yoke and pinion ?? There should not be.

Do you have the oil slinger installed? Are there any rough spots on the yoke shaft that are tearing up your seals? If so the polish the...er um shaft so it is really smooth.

Hi Troy,
Yes we installed the new oil slinger. Its a new repro yoke so no rough spots on it.(Was unable to locate a NOS yoke) New oil seal fitted and the rubber seal was a tight fit.The only thing i can think it may be,hate to say but the oil seal it could have been fitted wrong way.I carnt check until Saturday. All parts supplied by Jeepsudest and very pleased with the items and there service.
