I just finished rebuilding my front drive train. I have Bendix axles. when I rotate the hubs there is slight play and a slight "clunk" as the Bendix mechanism engages the inner axle. During disassembly some of the articulating surfaces had grooves, these were replaced with NOS axles. Bearings of course are all new. I followed the technical manual for the shimming procedure. So the question here is a slight clunk to be expected? I feel like if I add more shims there will be less free play and the cluck will reduce, but is this correct?

Unfortunately, I cannot give you more feedback regarding your problem. However, I would recommend you to change all inner shafts gradually to Spicer. Personally, I am switching gradually to spicer (cardan joint) shafts by replacing the original inner spindle bushing with the flanged one. I replaced the longer shaft first and in the future I will change also the short shaft. Less setup hassle, more readily available spare cardan joints and relatively maintenance free. The vehicle speeds will never be high enough to create wobbling problems while steering.
