Jeep measurement

Post by Billl » Wed Jun 13, 2018 9:08 am

I'm getting ready to buy a summer top for my 43 GPW. Could someone please measure the distance from the top
of the seat pad to the canvas top? I just want to make sure my head doesn't hit the top when I'm driving it. I'm
long in the torso...

If you are in the 6' 4" range or better, you will have the top flapping on your head. However, an incorrectly installed top will sag if the windshield is bent BACKWARDS or it is not drawn tight.

Hi Bill,
I measure 37 and 1/2 inches from seat cushion to top on my first GPW. Both cushions and top were bought from Beachwood Canvas many years ago, but I don't think the age matters. Beachwood seats are very dense and solid, and don't give much when I sit down. I'm 6 ft. 3 inches.
My other seat was from Webee Webbing and is much softer riding and gives more when I sit down. I don't have a top on that jeep yet, so I can't measure. Hope this helps.

As far as I can read the Ford GPW poorly scanned drawing (blurry), the clearance between the seat metal w/o cushion and the top should be 39,75 inches.

Bill....if you aren't going for a factory restoration, you might consider finding another outer frame and extending it up a few inches by adding a crossbar and two short ends that can be welded to the ends of the outer frame. This will RAISE the whole front of the top. Doing it this way still allows you to use the original top of the outer frame to secure the windshield in the DOWN position via the two clamps on the hood designed to do this.

You can drill a new set of holes in the new tube and thread in new windshield/top fasteners for the top to attach to.

If you decide you don't need to put up the top in summer, just swap out that original outer frame for the modified one with the inner swapped into it.

That's why they raised the frame height on the CJ2a.
