What you really want is a rethreading die which doesn't remove much if any material. You can buy sets for smaller sizes fairly cheaply, they are great for cleaning up all those corroded parts on your jeep. They make taps & dies. Less likely to break off in hole, just use plenty of oil. I recommend BreakFree CLP.
Homedepot sells one for 1-5/8-16 for $73 made by Drill America. Part number DWTSH1-5/8-16
You can probably get one off ebay or Amazon in Europe.

Thank you very much, in Poland the company produces such size thread (dies) size (1-5/8-16), but the price is 245 $.

It takes a little practice to get things just right, but it’s a very economical way to restore damaged threads.
