Thanks, My threads are basicly toast on one side. I am going to try to rethread, if that doesn't work I do have a problem, I guess.

Mes, we have some companies here, specialized on welding up, regrinding, hard chroming axles and stuff. Look around locally.

Hey Maarten
You really should explain what you actually mean when you say rear axle stubs .It should save confusion and get you the correct sizes.

Hi,
Its the threads on the hub flange, on with one pre-tension the wheel bearings with those big flat nuts. I thought it to be something like 16. 3/8, but I'm not sure.

Maarten,
The axle spindle threads are 1 5/8" diameter with 16 threads per inch as stated by SB5477. Depending on the length of the arc of the damaged threads and the severity of the damage it may be possible to reshape the threads with a thread file and/or a three square file by hand. An experienced machinist would have no problems with this procedure. Remember these are not metric threads.
If the damaged area of threads will only impact that area on one of the nuts you should be OK. If the arc of damage is in both nuts then the arc of damage needs to be less than 1/10 of the circumference of threads or about 1/2" long along the circumference to give a safe grab of the nut on the spindle . Longer then that and I would hesitate to repair, unless it was a field repair to return home. You might look into finding another axle assembly to replace this damaged one when all is done. Good Luck!
Regards
Bill

Most every one understands what is going on without added [Joel related] confusion & post accumulation.
Bill [a real machinist] has given all that is needed to get the spindle thread right.

Thanks all,
I'm going to use another housing witch I luckily have. Nevertheless it would be nice to fix the thread, it seems a waste to throw away a good housing because of this. I'll put it on a shelve and scratch my head some more on it when my jeep is finished.

In my neck of the woods we have a traveling shop called the "AXLE DOCTOR" who repairs spindles on the run.

Ben, those woods don't stretch all the way to Norway, I'm afraid  . I'm sure there's a good way to repair this and I'm not in a hurry.

Hello,
I'm revisiting an old thread about thread repair on Jeep rear axles as well as front axles that can be replaced. As the thread is bumped (stuck) at a certain section, this can happen when the hub is removed from the axle and the axle is banging around the workshop or garage. Then it would be a good idea to re-thread the ends of the axle with a 1 5/8"-16 UN Hand Thread Die and not to correct it with a file. I have a few such axles to correct the threads, only the cost of a new Thread Die is more than I gave for the axle. I would be happy to buy a used thread die or borrow it.
Best regards to all Jeep owners. Ted-Ber, Poland.
