JEEP REBUILD TAG PHOTOS?

Post by Chuck Lutz » Mon Dec 29, 2008 11:24 am

In the RESEARCH forum, Maury posted the list of JEEP rebuilders who had gov't contracts to recondition/rebuild jeeps in '44 & '45. Given all the holes guys find in the dash, this program might account for some of them..

Bechtel-McCone, Birmingham, Alabama
Allison Steel, Phoenix, Arizona
Higgins Plastic Corp., New Orleans, Louisianna
Moore Equip., Modesto, California
W.A. Bechtel, Oakland, CA
Bishop, McCormick & Bishop, Brooklyn, NY
International Diesel Co., ???
A.M. Meyerstein, ???
Stewart & Stevenson, Houston, TX
Vancora Motor Co., ???

If you know the city where they are located, or better yet can post a high quality photo of the actual plate that would be great!
1) Photo
2) Brass, steel or aluminum or zinc?
3) Post the measurements of the mounting holes on center please!

There is that brass shipping plate found on the dash of many jeeps, and there are a LOT of rebuild tags for motors, transmissions and transfercases I believe....

By the way, I have seen an aluminum tag , 5 1/16" x 1 7/8" that is embossed with the following:

FORDING
PULL OUT ONLY ON ENTERING WATER
WITH DEEP FORDING KIT ATTACHED
PUSH IN IMMEDIATELY ON LEAVING WATER

There is an arrow on the plate that points down to the left (the 7 o'clock position) that is probably pointing to the knob/lever mentioned...

Holes are 4 7/8" x 1 9/16".

Any idea what vehicle this is for? Truck, GPA, Weasel?

That's for M38-M38A1 vehicles that are equipped with fording gear.

Thanks Pete!

It was loose in a box so I had no idea what vehicle it was from.

Dushy...you have a very unique jeep! While it is not a "matching numbers" jeep, it has that 1944 dated rebuild tag which was a gov't program so it is technically a "correct" jeep as it sits. I don't see much that has been messed with by a post-war owner so it looks to be a pretty good "Time Capsule" itself. I would suggest you document everything on it from motor numbers, t-case and trans info, guages, seats....essentially everything in photos and posted info....

With that in mind, it will be possible to confirm if the jeep has post war replacements or if it is indeed pretty much exactly how it was reconditioned in 1944 with only some maintenance and painting after that.

With that rebuild tag I would not suggest you try to return it to the condition it was when it first rolled out of the Willys factory, but go with the rebuild history from 1944 (still during WWII!) andwork with that as your goal.

As they say, "It's YOUR jeep" so you can do with it as you please, but going with the 1944 rebuild approach will be more factual and a lot easier to do in my estimation!

Nice jeep!

Hi Chuck,
Thank you for your brilliant analysis and feedback......i complete agree that i should retain it in the 'Modesto Rebuild' condition, although i do suspect that it has been worked on after the War as there appear to be clear tell tale signs such as the Front Bumper & Gussets, but more importantly the Bolts' markings are not as per standard as advised in a comment on the Forum, as under.......
Early Chassie: Mostly TR20 bolts
Later chassies I have found TR, cTR, A and AA
Engine and gearbox: A ore AA bolts.
Cylinder head bolts TR
Hood catches: TR bolts and later w/o any markings.
Late body (44/45) mostly EC bolts [/size
]..........i have had a very preliminary and not a thorough check at all Bolt markings, but a cursory look at some that are easily viewable on the body etc are all Indian STM marked bolts.
So my MB has certainly been worked on before....Also the paint under the current one appears to be 'bottle green'.
Like you have suggested i would try and collect, collate & Log all the details of Main sections of the Jeep and revert back........then we can take a call....but changing it to Factory Original seems unlikely.
Can i PM you for feedback or shall i use the forum.
Cheers
Dushy
