That looks like a California DMV-assigned VIN number.

My Frame Serial Number on my 1942 Ford GPW .. believe this puts my production date somewhere between 15-21 July 1942. My head is a GPW marked head not sure about the engine but the serial number indicates what I believe indicates that the engine was replaced in 1943 .. can anyone confirm that based on the engine serial number?

Mark....

I believe that GPW motor was not a 1943 replacement at all....I believe it came out of GPW<->51487 after WWII. By the way, I have GPW<->17963 and it has a motor in it with GPW<->51122 stamped on the boss, which is as close as I can determine probably came out of a July 1942 GPW with that serial number on it. It is also a post WWII engine swap in my opinion.

Cleaned up the engine serial number a little bit

This is a rebuilt engine # 514875.
Mine is serial number 512132 and the engine was originally built in 7/1942.

If you rebuild your engine or if you remove the oil pan, you will find the manufacturing date stamped near the rear bearing on the engine block.

YLG80,

Both MB motors 514875 and 512132 should have casting date codes of mid Nov. 44 ( 11 - ?? ) and machining date ( very small font ) near the rear main bearing cap of mid to late Nov. 44. The number digits seen in the red box in your photo above is not the machining date of your MB motor.

Sorry, I did not mention that it is a rebuilt Ford GPW engine, not an MB.
My engine rebuild serial number has been stamped over the erased original engine serial number.

The only thing missing is the hood number which I have not been able to determine from the original owner. Would love help determining this last valuable part of the puzzle.

GPW 48005
Data plates are all brass. Hope to find USA number under all the paint, can see at least nine colors in the paint chips.

Interesting frame stamping. I've never seen it like that before.

1944 GPW. Thankfully the dataplates were kept as is and never restored. I'm going to put on a repro glove box door with repro stamped dataplates and keep the original stored as is.

The frame number looks like it matches the serial... as it seems to look like 208102. Thoughts on the best way to make that show up a little better? Not sure who/what left those scratch marks at the beginning.
