Just picked up a 42 Willys MB today. The data plate is a Ford plate. The serial number stamped on it matches the MB frame tag. The DOD is 03-24-42. In the box next to Ford-GPW, it is stamped BRT instead of 1/4 T. What's the deal with this. I'll get you a picture of it tomorrow Tom.

Also the Ford plate looks to be aluminum. The other two are brass.

Photos will be interesting . Also remember repop data plates have on the market for 30 plus years now so even an old repop that was new can look old today.

Hi bkalex,

Someone went to some length to make up a data plate with MB data. The BRT, 130169 and 3-24-42 are all correct looking to each other. The plate you have originally looked like the one below. If you blow your data plate photo up 300 to 400 % you can see the first 3 in the weight and I believe a 7 after the stamped nine which originally was the second digit of the serial number and a 3 at the end of the box which would have been the original 6th digit . There may be a 7 under the 3 in the date as well.

I can not tell if the originally digits were sanded down, filled in or tapped out and then sanded.

So the data may be correct for my jeep. Just copied from the original tag maybe. The serial number matches the frame plate. What is the BRT? And thanks for the info.

The BRT stamp was for MBs made for Britain. At some point before they were to be shipped the US and England traded jeeps then or in the future and many BRT marked MBs stayed in the country and was used by the armed forces here.

My GPW number 29508 brass data plate has a manufacturing date of July 1942. The plate only shows the 7 and the 42 and nothing in the middle of the date area. I have seen other data plate examples like this and would like to know if a specific factory did not include the actual day of manufacture?

Hi Tinwoodsman.

From my GPW studies and database, The Richmond, Ca. GPW assembly plant only used a Day and Year on the GPW data plate.
