TIRE REPAIR KIT

Post by alpino » Wed Mar 29, 2023 8:32 am

working on a bit of the minutiae today & was wondering, did MB/GPWs come with a tire repair kit?
Was there actual military kits? or specific tire company kits? of generic kind of kits?
Cannot roll the machine out into the yard with 36" of new snow
they came with a lot of spares & repair parts.
Any info or photos?

Is one in your TM 9-803?
Operators are not allowed to repair tires. That is a second echelon task.

okay sir, & I am sure you are a "sir"
but it says nothing in TM 9-803 about repairing inner tubes
I am asking this from an "outside the wire" [me], NCO [me], paratrooper [me] & cav scout [me] necessity
at least TO&E of a spare inner tube, or two, per vehicle
I am sure there was a need, you know 100 miles from the motor pool, behind enemy lines, Murphy's Law
hopefully someone else here can answer this question

I spent over 30 years in uniform and many times we obtained what we needed above and beyond what was authorized because the government only provides what is stipulated in the TO&E and that is often lacking. We purchased what we needed, where we could get it and used it regardless of what the regs said. We also did repairs when needed rather than wait for upper echelon. Rules are many times made by bureaucrats and hinder the efficient operation of a unit. I would find any 1940s era repair kit and add it to the kit. I think there is a brand which looks like the camel cigarette pack. I have never looked for a military repair kit, so do not know what it looks like. I think you are on the right track, and your military experience tells you the same thing. Press on you resourceful NCO. I wish I had many more like you when I served and fewer sir's who stood in the way of the mission.

Here is a 1970's military kit, so I suspect there were similar things in the 40s

Don't get me wrong; Mission always comes first. I never stood in the way of resourceful NCOs and soldiers, ever. I did think you wanted what would be correct for your jeep, not what could have happened.
Now, having a lone vehicle so far from Org maintenance, which is actually your own unit, 100 miles away, that would be very unusual from a heavy mechanized task force frame of mind.
But, yes, if you want to have a repair kit, which will consist of the old patch, glue, and scrubber, in the tobacco can, by all means go for it. You already have the jack, lug wrench, and air pump. And spare wheel and tire.

Good to see you have that forward attitude! I think it is this type of initiative that makes a difference in the US Military. Great NCOs and junior officers getting things done using their brains and their resourcefulness.

The simple answer is NO for Army Contract jeeps and YES for Marine and Export Contracts.

The Marine and Allied supply chains were anemic compared to the US Army. For this reason the spares kits that came with their jeeps were more robust. It had both a tube and tube repair kit. The tube repair kit that came in them was the Goodyear Small Tube Repair Kit.

A simple point is that combat rims are not easily broken down in the field and there are no tools in the jeep's tool kit to break the tire bead. This is what the spare tire is for. There is nothing stopping the operator from "acquiring" a repair kit if he wants one.

Hope this helps,
Peter

Hahaha... I remember this thread on the topic.

Y'all know it was going to be referenced. I have been saying this for twenty years on these forums now!

Navy and USMC had it. So did the Canadians and some other MBs.

THANK YOU for showing me/us this 2015 article or what ever they call them!
Before I asked my question I typed "tire repair kit" into search and got nothing
the 2015 was excellent, some opinions eh
might as well mention in my mechanized career of 151s, & Humvees with sand bags on the floors for IEDs lmfao, then M1114s
having a Montana frame of mind I carried Vice-grips everywhere, as vital as hot sauce
indeed in MT we call them "the Montana socket set" & God help the Joe if the motor pool sergeant catches him!
funny stuff that is extra, & stuff never issued - heard we were supposed to be issued one of those stainless steel pocket knives,
NEVER saw one. Paratroopers were supposed to be issued an official switch-blade, never saw one
and then we were issued [not everyone] in Iraq those beautiful Butterfly switch-blades - every time I gave it to one of my troops
you want to see a happy 19 year old! We even got those write upside-down-in-the-rain Space Pens, but our M-14s......................
never saw a scope until 6 months in country, & officers were having wives send them printers & ink
ANYWAY I'm going to put a tyre repair kit in my GPW

Here's a serious WWII era tire repair vulcanizer kit;

but I don't think it's something you'd keep in the vehicle. I do think tire tube repair kit, that are still available for bike tires, etc. makes perfect sense for a hobbyist going off-road.
