any insight on India made canvas tops?
Looking for some insight on a canvas top for my '45 GPW
Has anyone here got one made in India?
Or seen them at dealerships or shows?
They are much cheaper, 1/3 to 1/4 the price, than the ones made in the US
and instantly available, not ten weeks wait.
Thanks

I've never seen any of the canvas from India. My canvas from WEEBEE WEBBING, http://www.odcloth.com/products.html, has been on my Jeep for 15 years.

Re: any insight on India made canvas tops?
Hello Alpino,
I don't have any input on the India tops.
But I can tell you that even though WeeBee top prices have gone up by a little since last year or so, due to the general economic inflation,
you will not find a better, more perfect top for your jeep.
I have several of them, and I will say they look great, and are perfect in every way.
They will make you a top for either an early jeep without a gas can holder from the factory, or for a jeep with a factory mounted gas can holder on the rear panel.
In my opinion, I would rather wait for it to be made in Ohio, as it is well worth waiting for

The canvas color is a very nice shade of olive drab.
Also, WeeBee makes the top section of the top as 1 large piece of canvas,
not 2 pieces sown together like the Indian ones.
However, 2 piece ones are also seen in WW2 era pictures, but it is believed they may have been period replacement tops bought by the government.
So there are a few variations out there.
If you do get an Indian made one, post a report here.
Good luck !!
Best Regards,
Ray

There’s a picture in a thread on theCJ2A page:
https://www.thecj2apage.com/forums/canv ... top#533473
If all you want is something to keep the sun and rain off your noggin and dont care what it looks like, then I guess it’s ok. Certainly not a good representation of a WWII correct top.

I know noting about Indian tops, but some of their parts are just ok and others are crap. But I buy all my canvas from WEEBEE; just do that and move on.

Thanks everyone!
If I sell this next rifle, it will be WeeBee
I have to realize one of my main mottos is "buy American"

I have WeeBee on my MB and MBT. Had to wait, but an excellent product.

Re: any insight on India made canvas tops?
The Indian canvas is cheaper because it is a cheaper quality. I think it is ok for a reenactor but not if you want quality.
The single piece and two piece tops are MB. The single panel is 41 to early '44. The two piece started in early '44 to the end of the war when the canvas bolt spec changed from 72" to 36".
Both these versions have leatherette trim.
GPW's had 3 panels on the top and a single panel on the rear for the entire war. The trim was canvas twill. This is what would have come with your '45 from the factory and Dave can do it.
Cheers,
Peter
