Stuck distributor

Post by bowman » Wed Jan 26, 2022 1:45 am

I have a dizzy stuck fast in the block. I've done a search and seen this useful thread and I'm going to try knocking it out by hitting the tang on the bottom of the shaft through the oil pump hole. Tried wood but it just split. I suspect using a steel bar on the bottom of that thin tang could bend it over. I'm going to try finding a brass bar to use with a big hammer.

Can anyone see any problem with whacking the bottom of this tang with a brass bar with flat base please? Don't want to screw up and damage it.

Thanks

If you hit the tang on the bottom of the distributor you will knock the shaft up through the body of the distributor and destroy the whole thing. The shaft is only held with a small pin through the collar at the base of the distributor. If you really want to knock it up from the bottom, find a tube that will go over the shaft, but is small enough in diameter to pass through the hole in the block. The tube will come up against the collar on the base of the distributor body. This collar will take the knock when you drift it out.
I have removed them by heating the boss around the base of the distributor and using a strap type oil filter wrench to turn them slowly.

Yes winsky is right.
You should find a tube and insert it around the shaft in the red gap on the drawing.

Before you whang on it, put some PB blaster around it and try to rotate it. Or heat, as suggested. It is rusted in place. If you crack the block in that area (the thinnest part), you will not be happy.
Whatever you do, don't beat on the shaft. You will regret that too.

Hi Bowman,
had the same problem.
Try to use an oil filter band to rotate the distributor and lots of WD40 against the rust.

Joe DeYoung over on the CJ2A forum sells specialty tools, one such tool is made just for this purpose, might want to give it a try:

Interesting stuff Chuck, thanks! Trying to figure out how this works....do you clamp it up and pull upwards on the extension which applies leverage against the block?

Hi,

I would suggest the extension is where you apply percussive force to twist the distributor and therefore loosen it so it can be withdrawn!

In Joe's own words, "Out of my own personal necessity I have a new tool to offer... A distributor Wrench for those frozen distributors that just wont budge. It safely clamps onto the lower portion of a distributor with a outside diameter of 3.125 . The long handle give you something safe to tap on to rotate the distributor. I've added it to the bottom of the list on the 1st post in this thread. Hope it helps people out."

Notice Joe said “TAP” on it. I would not be trying to knock it loose, I would only be setting up some vibration to help the penetrating oil soak in. Right in the corner where the main body meets the “stem” of the body, theres a groove cut in that corner which makes a VERY THIN spot. As many know, it’s very easy to break the housing there, and these distributors are getting hard to find. Take it easy and be patient!

Hi,

If you do destroy the dizzy, JMP are about to release repro’s of the early and late (dustless) dizzies.

They will be their usual high quality.

See their FB page for details.
