Stencil "S" location on 5/42 GPW
My 5/42 GPW is ready for the blue drab stencils. When I removed the paint to uncover the hood numbers, I could not find the "S" on the hood. I couldn't find the "S" on the cowl either. The jeep has all the tinned bonding places and the the filter box under inside of the dash. I have looked at quite a few pictures and think the early GPW's had the "S" on the cowl and later years on the hood. I was careful in my sanding knowing there should be a "S" in one location but couldn't see anything. On the back panel I could not even see a registration number but am planning to put it there along with the "S" after the numbers depending on recommendations.
Can anyone tell me where or if the "S" should be?
Thank You, Gary

Hi Gary, the 'S' should be on the cowl for a 5/42 GPW.

EDIT:
Checked some info and see my comment below is wrong, hence the edit. Not sure where I got that idea from (but will see if I can work it out!).
However, food for thought: USA 2068492 S 'April 42 GPW on contractW-398-QM-10977'. Not sure on plant sorry.
'Happy to be proven wrong, but I thought the factory applied location of a S on a GPW was a plant thing, not a DOD thing?'
Ian.

Re: Stencil "S" location on 5/42 GPW
Hi Ian,
Thank you for the information. I was looking at JeepDraw pages and found a picture under GPW which says "Ford As New". It shows the S on the cowl. I rechecked some of my pictures of the hood and did have a "-S" painted in white but could not see anything in blue. All I can tell from looking at pictures is, it seems early was on hood and cowl and late was on the hood. I guess I will throw the S up in the air and see where it sticks.
Thanks everyone.

Re: Stencil "S" location on 5/42 GPW
The S was on the cowl in blue drab from the factory. The unit re-stenciling in white was haphazard at best. Some painted out the blue drab before applying the white while others just painted over them so that both show. The white stencils varied in size, font, and placement.
As for the S, that was also haphazard and they are found both on the hood and cowl.
Find a picture you like as your guide and do what feels right if you are not doing it as factory.
Enjoy your jeep.
Peter

I am trying to do a factory restoration, so I will put it on the cowl. I like the picture on JeepDraw which is detailed enough to give me accurate placement. Thanks

Hi Gary M.
No worries mate.
I’ve received word from a GPW researcher, some may say he whispers to them even, that the placement of the S was plant dependent.
He suggested you share the Plant your GPW is from Gary as that will help determine where it should go.
Ian.

The Whisperer told me years ago that my Sep 44 Gpw with 4x4 in the mystery box was built in Dallas and should have the '' S '' on the hood, that is from the factory.
Cheers

Just following on, knowing that Gary had his answer but to provide more proof to the 'S can be on the hood on a GPW' statement.

So where would the position of the S be on a Louisville built GPW?

As far as I know the '' S '' on a Louisville GPW is on the cowl.
