T84 Oil Recommendation and Sources

Post by Jon Paulikonis » Sat Dec 04, 2021 7:39 am

Good Saturday morning:

I need to change my T84 oil, and I am not sure which oil to use or where to get it. I have seen in a video that NAPA 90W mineral was used, but I can't find it. If anybody could please provide what has worked for them, I would greatly appreciate it. I tried searching this page, and I must be a knucklehead, because I couldn't find anything.

Thanks!

Hello,
Use 90W GL4 grade, not GL5 .
From my gearbox, after only 500 miles, full of brass paillettes...

I have quickly changed the oil with 80W90 GL4 for classic cars.

Hi,

T84 and transfer case get 90W GL4. Axles get EP90 GL4.

According to the TM, if operating in cold climates you can go down to 80 weight.

I use GL4 ONLY; as specified in your TM; never Gl5, no matter what it says on the bottle ( some say, safe for yellow metals). Napa sells it, and will order it for you if not in stock. 80W90. I've also ordered it from Amazon; Sta Lube, GL4, 85W90. No need to change it for "cold" temps; it works here down to -20. Fahrenheit.
I use GL 4 in the differentials too, (it is Hypoid oil) although you could use GL5 in them It is cheaper.....

Yves, your First Army jeep's Headquarters is here on Rock Island Arsenal; they just put a Halftrack, and a tank destroyer in front of it. I was there yesterday, going to the commissary.

Thanks for the information. I didn't know that.
I have found on their FB page a picture with the Half-track suspended to a crane in front of the HQ.

First_Army_HQ_Half-track.jpg

That's cool.
There were 2 or 3 half-tracks and Stuart tanks and armored cars here of the 1st Army between Sept 7th and 9th.
They were assigned as guards for the VIIth Corps Jayhawk HQ of General Collins
This one is right in front of the castle and was photographed from the 1st floor.

General Collins in one of his two M20 was here also.
The armored car on that photo taken by my father-in-law is marked "Lightning""

Almost nobody knew here that this highly appreciated General, commander of the 1st Army in England, stopped by here until I've published a Youtube slideshow showing that event.
I hope that the local authorities will celebrate the anniversary in 2023 with something special.

Thanks again for that information.

Just ran around town today, as even sometimes the blind squirrel finds a nut. Not today.

All I could find is Valvoline 80w90 GL4 and GL5. My local NAPAs can't order the old straight up GL4 oil. Tractor Supply shows Traveller straight SAE 90 All Mineral for old Ford tractors, but it does not allow me to order it. Not sure if that even would work.

I will go with the Amazon option in the near term, but further leads and advice is much appreciated!

Yeah, all the oil I got this year was off Amazon. Also on the Arsenal, the National Cemetery is expanding another big area for graves; they are putting concrete boxes on top of the ground, and filling around them. (Otherwise you would be under water). RIA is in the middle of the Miss River.
It now goes right next to the Confederate Cemetery; there was a Confederate Prison here on the island before the Manufacturing part of the arsenal was built in the 1870s. All those buildings are still here, but most are offices now and that is where First Army is now. Previously it was TACOM. About 500 of the Confederates stayed. Forever.

I ordered the Millers all mineral from amazon. I am also trying to track down PennGrade Classic 80w90, which also sounds like it is for antique applications containing yellow metals.

I use Sta-Lube in the MB and other vintage cars. It is GL4. Available on Amazon.

I use Napa Gear oil GL-1. I picked it up off the self at NAPA and use it in everything except the engine because of Ron’s video, see link.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-iTwDYI4mVQ

What is the difference between GL-1 and GL-4?

This is what I use in transmission, gear box, both differentials, and transfer case.

This is what I've used in my old transmissions and transfercases and despite shipping, has been less expensive than buying locally at the Farm box store, when they even have it.

I also use GL1 in all my old vehicles. It’s what they used when they were built.

You must not be self-employed, Dave.
I hear, GL-1 is what they used 70 years ago and it is what I use now, all the time.
GL-1 is what was used 70 years ago but we have come a long way baby, as the saying goes.
If an individual wants to use 70 year old technology, it is a personnel choice.
If I use it and the unit fails, it is going to get dumped at my doorstep with the demand "I did it and I need to fix it". At my expense.
Makes for a bad day!
There is GL-3/4 gear oil and I have seen GL-4/5 that states on the label it is safe for brass.
Questioning the counter guy about this is usually useless. All they know is, read the label.
Straight GL-5 is out. Not good for brass. Period. For High Performance apps. and outboard boat motor lower units. Not good for 70 year old jeeps.
Your personnel choice applies.
My reputation and bank account apply on my end.
