Need MB seat spring pictures (No late war stuff.)

Post by hopps1945 » Sun Nov 25, 2018 6:54 pm

Researching seat springs and running into a snag on the Willys front and rear seat bottom spring arrangement. I have in my collection/documenntion the MB late series, GPW mid and late springs. I have spent all day searching the G forum and cannot seem to find any good photos of the MB seat bottoms. I have found a few pictures in the Lloyd White books but sadly missing some details I need. Does anyone have any in their collection that would be willing to share some photos of? I would appreciate it!

This front seats cushion springs drawing could be of some help.

Thanks for that but this is actually a late war GPW front seat. Ford used a more narrow spring in the late series.

This is indeed a Ford drawing but I would qualify it as early or mid, but surely not late.
That drawing is dated from Nov. 1942 and was abandoned as obsolete in September 1943.
Anyway, sorry I don't have another drawing.

The drawing was "started" in 11-1942, and the drawing itself might be early, but it is not the date of implementation into production. The type of springs illustrated in the drawing were only used in the late 3rd series spring seats.

A hi-res photo of this one would be great. Can almost make out the details of the front and rear seat bottoms springs.Image

Were the bottom sides of the early Willys Seat cushions w/springs exposed or were they canvas covered?

From approx Nov 1942 to approx April of 44, the springs were enclosed with the zipper compartment on the bottom. From April 44 till end of production, the zipper pocket was eliminated and the springs exposed on the bottom.

To add to this. Prior to the 44 change over, Willys used 6 across where after 44, the exposed was only 5. I believe the arrangement front to rear might be slightly different. Trying to confirm proper arrangement.

sideI have a NOS G503 Passenger frame with cushions, The bottom cushion has springs, no zipper and I believe the springs are not exposed.
Will look for you, it might be a day or two.

Speaking of MB Seats.
I just remembered I had some cushions that are USMC Green and were removed from a NOS USMC Green passenger side frame. Had this since at least the 50's. I have both back and bottom cushions and have the original NOS frame storedwith my JEEP parts, am posting just the bottom cushion for now.
Note that the springs are enclosed.

That is a Willys upper cushion assembly for the 2nd and 3rd series seat cushion sets, but it's O.D. and not Forest Green.

Thank you, Farrell. For some reason the photo came out a different shade than the frame and cushions. They sure appear USMC color in day light. Will take it over in natural light, may not be today, though.

Hi Nick,

Not sure if this will help - used original rear base:

Also NOS dated 63:

It appears the used original has two straps and the NOS has none. Also the NOS
one appears to be a much darker canvas than used one viewing in hidden areas.
Would be good if you could let me know if suitable for GPW and/or MB.
Pete

My NOS rear seat cushion may be of help but it is shorter than standard to fit in the radio jeeps.
