Double Lip Pinion Seal Installation

Post by GreaseAndGlory » Mon Feb 12, 2018 8:21 pm

I have a couple of rookie questions dealing with the double lip pinion seal. The seal I have is shown below. The side with the spring retainer should be facing inner towards the differential, correct? Is the gasket that goes underneath the single lip seal optional with this type? I assume the oil slinger should still be present. Google is usually my best friend, but most of the posts I pull up are out of date with missing images. Any advice will greatly be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Do you mean the dust shield?

Thanks for the quick reply! The oil slinger is this part, https://www.vintagejeeps.com/p-805-driv ... 36566.aspx. I'm sure it is needed still.

Word of caution.
The original seals did not have the dust lip. The rubber lip sticking out on the front of the new style, double lip seal.
The dust shield could come into contact with the front dust lip, damaging it. If this happens, the dust shield would need to come off.
With the new style seal, with the dust lip, the shield really is not needed.
