Future MVPA conventions

Post by TaneyCountyJeeper » Tue Jan 17, 2023 5:55 pm

The MVPA website used to list the future convention locations up to about 5 years into the future, now it seems they only list the most recent (2023) show. Does anyone know where the shows in 2024 and later will be?

It would be great if we could get a show in the Tulsa, OK, Fort Smith, AR, Springfield, MO area.

You need to convince a MVPA affiliate club to host. Are you active in your local affiliate?

Yes. From what I gather, that’s how it’s done.

However, also from what I gather, not many affiliated groups have the desire to, the willing man power to, or place to host.

I understand these are some obstacles.

I’m
Also wondering if it’s not becuse of membership age
In these local MVPA groups.

At least from my perspective, I’m seeing the longest running and oldest MVPA members slowly dying off, or let’s face it, too old to physically do a lot of what they once could. In other words, less active in their groups.

I’ve seen a lot of the original members getting out of the hobby in the last few years.

Are we recruiting “new blood”
To replace our aging members?
Is the interst in MV’s declining? Or growing?

I’ll also note this, being a “steering committee” member of a living history event:

There are many who like to show up, very few like to do the hard work.

So yes, you and your group may wish to host an MVPA convention, but will the entire group, or most of it, step up to take on all the work that’s required?

The California MVCC did shows in 1999, 2003, and 2016 so we understand the level of committment that needs to happen to host one of these shows. First off it takes about a year or more to put one together and during that time you only need anout 3 or 4 people to do the legwork of scouting locations and verifying that they will meet the needs of the MVPA. Is there indoor and outdoor space? Is there a good host hotel nearby? Is it within reasonable distance to a major airport? Are there local transport and catering services available? As you get closer to the event date you need about 20 members dedicated to the event that can donate their time getting things finalized and setting up the site, then another 10 or more to actually work the event. So there's a manpower committment that has to happen that precludes some clubs from hosting a convention and with the skyrocketting costs of almost everything these days that becomes another major consideration. This is why the midwest has become the most popular place to hold them, anywhere along the coasts is just too expensive.

Another point to consider is the clubs memberships are ageing. Seniors simply don't have the energy they had in their youth. That and we've lost so many of them over the years. And when you look at the costs of acquiring and restoring a vehicle there's another impediment. Finally most of us grew up knowing someone that served in the military be it Dad or Grandad, Mom or Grandma. This peaked our young interest in what they'd done in their youth. That's gone by the wayside today, followed by a general lack of interest in patriotism. Throw in all the alternatives challenging for their time and you can see why we aren't recruiting new members.

I'm reviving this older thread.

There is hope for the future. We have a small group of volunteers working since March of 2023 on organizing and helping host the MVPA 2024 Convention. https://www.mvpa.org/convention

Despite our gray hair, we have enthusiasm, and the motivation to help our hobby, and generate interest for a new generation of MV enthusiasts.

We are doing our best to make this a fun event, with many things to see and do. Oshkosh, Wisconsin is easy to get to. The weather is nice in September. The people who live in the region are friendly and supportive.

If you have any questions, post them here, and I will do my best to answer them.

You can help support the MV hobby, the MVPA and volunteers like us by attending this event. Save the Date! September 12-14, 2024.

My wife and I plan to register our '43 Willys MB at Oshkosh this year. The level of restoration is up to factory class standards according to the MVPA website. Our question we are trying to find out is about additional markings on the vehicle. Will we be disqualified from showing in factory class for having additional unit markings on the vehicle if everything for the engine, body, frame, and paint color are all correct?

Thanks Dan!
To reiterate, properly applied unit markings will not result in a deduction of points on a factory class entrant.

James & Miranda,
I look forward to seeing the two of you and your MB at the convention!

Hi all

I’m going to attend the 2024 MVPA Convention in Oshkosh and have registered, but I have questions and called and emailed but no response yet, so here goes:

When do vehicles have to be there for motor pool showing/judging?

Is there a motel that most MVPA members are staying at?

When is vendor setup?

Any help would be appreciated.
