Anyone starting to make plans to go to Normandy in 2024? Can we get a group going together?

I believe the Military Vehicle Trust are planning events in Normandy for 2024.

Hi,

As far as U.K. goes, IMPS have nearly filled their trip.

We’re travelling independently and staying with friends but joining the IMPS tours.

Thanks, All for your replies. Perhaps we can coordinate a get together during the week. Quick question - is anyone staying on for the week after D Day week?

Does anyone have a rough idea what that might cost if you go with a group. And who to contact?

For those who inquired, here's an overview of what the Invicta IMPS group (UK) has planned:

Sunday Jun 2 / Monday Jun 3: Overnight ferry from Portsmouth UK to Ouistrehem (Caen) – leaving Sunday 2nd June, arriving early Monday 3rd. Convoys to campsites (Port-en-Bessin & Colleville-sur-Mer), check in, and a welcome meeting on the Monday evening.
Tuesday 4th and Wednesday 5th – run outs organised by IMPS members. If you haven’t done these before, they usually involve stop offs at several places of interest and cover anything from 25 to 70 miles. Details nearer the time but I’m quite excited by what we have planned so far.
Thursday 6th – really early start to be in convoys to Arromanches beach to see the sun rise. Later there may be a requirement to all park up at somewhere like the Longues Battery (vehicle movements are very restricted on 6th).
Friday 7th – Port-en-Bessin parade in the afternoon, restricted numbers due to the town being very small, and sorry but only British or Canadian marked vehicles.
Saturday 8th – another day of IMPS run outs.
Sunday 9th – Bayeau parade, followed by Tilly-sur-Seulles. American marked vehicles welcome, but run at the back of the parade. If you only do one event, do the Bayeau one.
Monday 10th – daytime ferry back to Portsmouth.

To contact IMPS, you can email normandy2024@imps.org.uk.

We started our recent tour (2019) with a helicopter tour of the beaches - well worth it to see them from the aerial perspective. Definitely reommend at a minimum seeing the Utah Museum of the Landings, Caen Museum, Saint Mere Eglise & Airborne Museum, Maisey Battery, Longues-sur-Mer Battery, Pegasus Bridge & Cafe, Pointe du Hoc, both the American & German Cemetaries. Also if you are there on a Saturday, market day In Bayeaux and the Bayeaux tapestry.

Here’s a list based on four trips to Normandy, it all depends on how much time you have and how many locations you want to see that are off the beaten path. Do your research, prioritize, and plan ahead. The invasion area is 50 miles long and you want to avoid wasting time zig-zagging back and forth. The weather is always a factor and can be unpredictable. I would suggest prioritizing seeing actual significant locations over spending all your time in museums, there are monuments to them all over Normandy. Though you will see a lot of invasion artifacts in museums, you should spend most of your time visiting significant locations where important events occurred, or locations where well known photographs were taken. It will deepen your appreciation of what occurred and will give you a closer connection with the soldiers who fought in those locations.

- Airborne Museum, Ste. Mere Eglise
- Dead Man’s Corner Museum, St. Come Du Mont
- American Cemetery, Colleville- Sur-Mer
- Musee d’Omaha, Vierville
- Utah Beach Museum
- Maisy Battery, Grandcamp-Maisy
- German Cemetery, Le Cambe
- La Fiere Bridge
- Point du Hoc
- Pegasus Bridge and Museum
- Church/Aid Station, Angoville-au-Plain
- Big Red One Museum, Colleville-Sur-Mer

10 should be enough to see most of the interesting sites. I would suggest to find a central place to stay, like Bayeux rather than Caen.

Some of my personal favorite sites are the Battery de Longues-Sur-Mer and the WN 60 bunker group, overlooking Omaha Beach with a great view but a bit of the beaten track and less crowded than the WN 62 which is located between Omaha Beach and the Colleville cemetery.

I'm planning to send over my 42' GPW and/or possibly a command car. I'm shipping it from Maine to England. I've already rented an apartment for the week in Port En Bessin. I figure we'll visit museums in Maine the week before DDay then take the ferry over.
