Hi Brad,
Strickly speaking, no. However, the tags are WW2 period correct and were used to identify the octane rating of gas in the cans at fuel depots. There were different numbers, each with there own color and the numbers were raised to help idenitfy them in the dark. I think it might be BobN that has an article on his website. I have an original red 80 . There are some repro discs that attach with a chain and I am not sure they are correct.

These tags are definitely WWII, unless they are a repro.
However for some reason all the original ones I ever saw still attached and to a jerrycan, and apparently unmolested, were on British made jerrycans. Never saw one, nor a picture, on a U.S. made jerrycan: I am aware it might be just a coincidence. Any different experience from the other jerrycan guys?

I purchased one can with a tag, but can't remember if it was American or British. I will try to look this weekend.

Luca,
Back in 03 I purchased a Brit 43 jerry can that still had an original red 80 octane tag on it. I agree with you, I havn't seen any tags that were originally on US cans. But than again, i've only seen 3 originals still on cans :?

Luca,

I was there when a friend found this one at the Beaulieu International Autojumble last September.

This is the can I purchased.

I don't rcall anyone commenting on the "B" in the past. What is it's meaning?

Image
Bottom info is similar, yet different than Derek Eddlestone's friend's can. The typographical font(compare the style of the C's) is different, and my can has a symbol(that I have yet to decipher) stamped between the ICC5, and the "Gauge-Capacity-Year".

The bottom is OD green(unlike the rest of the can). I cannot see any remnants of Red paint on the Octane tag, so it is a bit confusing as to whether this tag's original or not. Click on the picture to enlarge.

Just thought I would add, this can was purchased in the USA.

I had a look at my complete war time series of Wheeling cans: only for the later ones it is possible to fit this kind of tag. Earlier ones did not have the slot built in.
I am still inclined to think that the tag were a british thing later extended ( possibly?) to U.S. cans. Quite a few guys confirmed that they always found the tag on british made cans, for what it is worth.

Pre-'43 cans didn't have the slot to take the tab.
Here's some pics I have in my library.
Al's original 80 tag he mentioned earlier.
