"Mystery Can" being made in factory, Palestine 1944

Post by Quest Master » Thu May 19, 2022 10:38 am

I found another photo of the "Mystery Can", which I recently scanned, Signal Corps photo, SC188568, at the National Archives, College Park, Maryland.

“February 24th 1944, the modern factory at Camp Tel-Litwinsky, Palestine, when jerricans are manufactured in mass production on the straight line American style” Photo by Tec 4 Charles N. Arnold, South Carolina, Signal Corps Photo Section, USAFIME.

This appears to be the Is this the United States Marine Corps Expeditionary 5-Gallon Container, AKA "Mystery Can"? Note, that the can has no markings.

Fabulous photographs, thanks for sharing them.

In the Facebook forum we've coined the phrase "Egyptian Can" for these.

There are so many peculiarities in the world of jerrycans. I don't think these can be called "expeditionary" as this had round openings, unlike these which had the more oval style
