Hello.
A fella up the road was throwing out a old drum the other day. I dropped in and asked if I could have it to put around some saplings we're planting.
When I picked it up it was heavier than any like sized drum I'd ever picked up. Then I rolled it over and this was on the bottom:
I'm in Australia, so I wonder how it ended up in our small town. Also wondering if we can tell how old it is??
Here, we call them 44 gallon drums.
Thanks for any help.

It is from WWII and is USAAF. The Air Force was part of the Army until 1948.
Your drum is 1943.
It was obviously from the USAAF. Find out where the US airfields were in Australia during the war or immediately post war and that is going to be your best bet on its' history.
Cheers,
Peter

That's fabulous, thanks very much for the info Peter, that's very interesting.
It must have started life up in the North as that's where all the action was back then. Northern Territory, North Queensland, Northern Western Australia.
Thanks again.

Would that be known as a 55 gallon drum in the US?
