Oil drum lids info request - property Airforce US Army

Post by Aussiemob » Sun Apr 04, 2021 6:13 pm

Hi all,
We recently found these oil drum lids in Central Australia & are wondering if anyone can tell us about them - how old they might be, are they worth anything etc. We also saw other lids, but I think they were only marked USN. I'll have to take more notice next time we go fossicking. My husband plans on cleaning them up & painting in military colours.
Any info would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

Very cool! Some of these drums stayed only in the galvanized finish, others seem to have been painted Olive Drab. I don't think the raised lettering was ever highlighted originally. But were they mine I would paint the letters white or yellow. The drums were originally tighthead, that is the lids did not come off, somebody probably cut them off to use the drums for burn barrels or rubbish bins or whatever.

If you do some internet research you can probably narrow down the age of your lids.

US Army Air Force would have came after US Army Air Corps, the US Air Force was established around 1947.

The bottom of the drums would of had a date of manufacture embossed into it, along with the manufacturer's name.

A good find regardless!

Thanks so much, Matt & Roy. We love looking for "treasure" like this & will be going back to the same area to see what else we can find.
Cheers!
