Why is it my aluminum water can will not fit in the can holder"

Post by P-59A » Mon Aug 31, 2020 6:50 pm

So, I doing a little refub on this trailer and figured I would have one side gas and the other water. My aluminum water can will not fit into the can holder. The plastic can fits just fine. The same aluminum water can fits just fine on the military can holders on my Sammy. Why is this?

The can holders on the trailer must have been made a little smaller than the standard can holder usually encountered.

I don't have an aluminum can to look at before the weekend, but would guess that the rolled seam on the bottom is a little fatter than a steel can.
Possibly because the gauge of aluminum is thicker than the 20 gauge used in steel cans to maintain similar strength.

Roy, That rolled rim at the bottom of the aluminum can is the hang up. I guess they didn't want water cans on this trailer.

A plastic water can fits fine.

I just tried an aluminum usmc marked water can on my usmc genset trailer like yours and it also doesn't fit. Kinda makes sense because it's a generator trailer. Fuel would be more important than water. Metal fuel cans fit perfectly and that is what was on mine when it was sold as surplus.
